If you are vacationing in Door County, and you are looking to buy a non-traditional souvenir or a special gift for an Irish relative or friend (or if you happen to be Irish yourself), then stop in at O'Meara's Irish House, on Highway 42 (the main road in Door County) in Fish Creek . It's a small store, located near a frozen custard place, and not too far from the entrance to Peninsula State Park. I'm sure you will find all kinds of things that are of interest to you. There are many kinds of things from Ireland, including apparel and porcelain ware. There is street parking, so you don't have far to walk.

If you're in Door County and you and/or the kids are looking for something to do, try the Pirate's Cove Miniature Golf courses on Highway 42 in Sister Bay (on top of the hill, not too far from the Piggly Wiggly). There are actually two separate courses there, and they're both on multi-levels, which is more fun than the one level courses. And they have waterfalls, brooks, etc. and moving objects which makes it more challenging/adds strokes to your scores. There is also a go cart racing track right adjacent to the miniature golf for even more fun!

If you are in Door County and are looking for some unusual English or Victorian type items (including some larger pieces of furniture), then stop by and see Chelsea Antiques; they are not on the main road (ie Highway 42), but instead on the more quiet Highway 57. They are located in a two-story structure/barn, so there are a few steps to go upstairs and see some of their treasures. There is also an adjacent building which has items for the kitchen (I bought some out of the ordinary dishtowels there and a great tea kettle), as well as for kids rooms, and some really unusual items for the backyard garden as well.

Peninsula State Park in Door County, Wisconsin is a great place to go if you like to hike, bike, camp, fish, swim, golf, or take a scenic drive. There is an observation tower that is several stories high, but has a terrific view of the peninsula and Green Bay and is well worth the effort. There are numerous campsites (you'll need to reserve in advance), and if you didn't bring your bike you can rent one outside the park. You need to pay a visitor's admission fee to enter the park, but it is well worth it. And, if you like to golf, there is a great golf course there as well (and a driving range if you'd like to practice).

Speilman's has been on Highway 42 in Fish Creek for years. They have all kinds of items made out of wood, and is a good place to stop if you're looking to buy a gift that is not a traditional type of vacation souvenir. But they are also known for their wood benches which are made out of cedar. We purchased one several years ago, and while it has turned and faded to gray, it has stood up to the test of Chicago winters and summers and is still in our backyard. Speilman's also makes swings for the backyard as well. They also have a very nice children's section, selling items made out of wood as well as other types of toys and puzzles.

Unlike the other Chicago museums which are fairly close to downtown, The Museum of Science and Industry is located around 55th and Lake Shore Drive. The building looks a little like the Greek Parthenon, and was built for the Chicago World's Fair in the 1930's. Everyone has a great time when they visit here, whether you're a kid or an adult reliving your childhood. Anyone who has grown up in Chicago can share the memories of visiting the coal mine or the submarine. (And the submarine exhibit was recently reopened as they had completed the rehab work on the sub, as age was starting to catch up with it). It's a great place for field trips (as you can see by all of the yellow school buses lined up in front of the museum).

George Garner Cyclery has locations in Northbrook, Libertyville, and Lake Zurich. DH had been searching for a new bike the last few months. The folks at George Garner Cyclery in Northbrook on Waukegan Road were especially helpful with some good advice, and he ended up purchasing his new bike there (a 27 gear specialized Crossroads Elite bike, which has special flat protection tires, padded grips, rapid fire shifters which minimize wrist movement, and an upright seating position for a more comfortable, longer distance ride.) He also found that test driving the bike outside the store was very helpful in deciding on the bike he ultimately ended up buying.

We had hired Aspen Exterior to replace our living room and dining room windows last year. This was an especially hard project, as the windows in the living room are ceiling to floor and are extremely tall, and this ended up being a custom window order as they panes were basically one long, long pane of glass. Taking out the windows was tricky, but even harder was the task of actually putting them in so that they fit and don't leak. It required a lot of work, but the workmen completed it within the time frame they had estimated it would take, and even more important, the windows look good and they don't leak!!!

LJ Brown Plumbing has been in business since the 1940's. They do a full array of plumbing services, and can fix water heaters, leaks, sump pumps, faucets, toilets. And they accept major credit cards for payment. When we thought we had tree roots in our sewer line and the one company rodded out the line and it didn't help, we called LJ Brown, and they concluded that we had a broken pipe leading from the utility room out into the street, which they did end up fixing for us (which was great, as my laundry was starting to pile up.)

If you are having a large party, and you need to rent a tent, huge tables, extra chairs, linens, plates, glassware or silverware, chafing dishes, warming trays, special event balloons, etc. then Hall's is a place to visit. This is especially handy for Thanksgiving and Christmas if you are planning to have a larger than normal gathering. They have a large fleet of trucks which can deliver the items you need to wherever you are holding your party, outdoor wedding, or any other event.
