Several of my friends and I all take our Hondas to Alex's for maintenance and repairs. (He doesn't just work on Honda's... though he apparently does specialize in foreign cars). We've all been really happy with the work done there - as well as with our interactions with Alex. He's a nice guy - friendly & helpful - and nobody I've talked to has had a single complaint about the work he's done. The prices seem relatively reasonable and the work has always been reliable. Last time my car got a much-needed complementary vacuuming and a few other free perks.

Our cat has had nearly disastrous (and undiagnosable) skin problems off and on for years. We were recently referred to the Animal Skin & Allergy Clinic for a diagnosis and treatment. After several weeks of treatment (and a few hundred dollars) the immediate problem was cleared up. However, our cat ended up with a severe infection as an un-necessary side-effect of her treatment. Though (so far) our cat's problem is gone, we never really felt we received a great explanation of what her problem may be, what the best long-term approach for dealing with it is, and what her prognosis is. If you use this clinic, be persistent in asking questions and monitoring the care your pet is receiving. They probably do provide a reasonably good service but could definitely be improved by better communication with the client.

We've been taking our three pets here for a year and have received really great care. The doctor is always very thorough and spends what seems to be a huge amount of time with us - providing lots of information and answering all of our questions. The follow-up care is always great too. We always receive at least one follow-up phone call after a visit with a sick animal... sometimes this is from the doctor herself. Our impression is that they are very attentive to individual clients, their pets, and the standard of care everyone receives. The downside is that we're practically going broke paying for their services. Moral of the story - if you want good, attentive, compassionate care and money isn't a huge issue, Hawthorne Hills gets a thumbs up. If you are tight on funds - or - if you're looking for anything other than a pretty straightforward, standard, western-medicine approach - look elsewhere.

This is a fun place to visit on Orcas Island. Crow Valley Pottery has a variety of styles of pottery and a growing selection of other arts and crafts. Their biggest pottery collection is an assortment of plates, bowls, etc all handpainted in vivid colors with whimsical animals and patterns. They are fun and unlike the run-of-the-mill stuff you'll find in many places. It's quite pricey to walk away with much from Crow Valley Pottery... but if you don't, you'll probably be left planning a return trip! It's been two years since my first visit and I'm finally the proud owner of a couple beautiful plates with ravens painted on them. It's definately worth a visit!

I'm no great Indian food but it seems like it's easy to find a bad Indian restaurant, moderately easy to find a good one, and rare to find an excellent one. Taste of India easily falls into the higher end of the "good" category. All the dishes I've tried have been tasty and satisfying. We order takeout from Taste of India once a month or so and are always really happy to dig in to our Palak Masala with paneer and Chicken Tikka Masala in front of a movie at home. If you'd prefer to eat out, the restaurant is relatively casual, always bustling, and the staff are very attentive and friendly. Try the spinach naan... yum.

Friendly waitstaff, a casual atmosphere, yummy food, and not a big hit to your wallet. We walk to this restaurant once a week or so for a reliably good vegetarian dinner. Much more expensive veggie restaurants with fancier food and a bigger selection of dishes are definitely available... but we've never gone wrong at Sunlight Cafe when we were in the mood for unfailingly yummy, simple food and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. For dinner, try the polenta with black beans and the sweet potato cakes.
