The Crest is a second run theater. They show movies that have been out a while, or will soon be on DVD. The tickets are really cheap, less than half of most Seattle theaters. They show a good mix of popular, mass audience movies, along with more unusual art and foreign releases. Plus, the place is a true neighborhood theater. Go there regularly, and you will see many of the same families and couples. It's a great place to catch up on all the movies you are otherwise missing. One caveat though- if you have a particularly large or sensitive rear end, the seats can be unpredictable. They may not all securely hold an unwieldy load. Take it as a chance to try many seats and get to know your neighbors prior to the movies start.

Easy Street is a record store the way they used to be. Good selection, both new and used, still carries vinyl, and you want to hang out there and see what's new. They also carry DVD's and other media, new and used. They also host very cool visiting artists. Last year, when Patti Smith hit the west coast for a few gigs, she stopped by Easy Street for a great q&a with the fans. I don't know what higher recommendation to give, than to say this is the one record store in Seattle Patti Smith chose to hang out. (She was hilarious and irreverent in person, I might add).

Swanson's rises above most local choices for buying plants. They have great selection, including Northwest native plants and interesting varieties, from annuals to trees and everything in between. My experience has been that plants bought here do much better long term than plants bought more cheaply (say at Home Depot or Lowes). Good edible selections too, from berries to vegetables and herbs. Staff is very helpful with advice particular to your yard conditions.

SAM brings in some good traveling shows (Jacob Lawrence, Frida Kahlo, Van Gogh come to mind). Good quality shows like that every year to year and a half. But even those shows are always tasteful, somewhat boringly safe, and definitely not cutting edge, interesting or controversial. And if you are excluding such choices from your shows, what is the point? I also find the permanent collection pretty dull and uninspired. Compare the contents of this museum with say, San Francisco's, Chicago's, or LA's, and no, Seattle does not yet have a truly world class art museum.

The Honeyhole opened a few years ago. I was in grad school at SU at the time. They serve really good subs and sandwiches, including tasty veggie ones too. The menu is original and unique, and everything on there is very good. (My favorite is the Liotta). The guys who own the place are two cool young brothers, and the staff and customers are friendly and eclectic. A best bet for Capitol Hill.

During the whole Krispy Creme craze, I appreciated their donuts but never got the hype. I mean, it's a donut. A gooey, sugary donut. Perhaps then I was a boy. But one night with Top Pot made me a donut man. These are donuts the way they were meant to be. Rich, dense, old fashioned balls of fried dough glory. Take your kids, take your grandparents, take a typically serious looking worker bee, and give them a nice-pink -frosted-coconut-coated-topped-slice-of-heaven-looking-like-a-sno-ball-piece-of-joy. You'll be glad you did.

Scarecrow hardly needs an introduction if you live in Seattle. But for new arrivals or visitors, if you love movies, you owe yourself a trip to check out Scarecrow. This independent store has tens of thousands of films in every conceivable genre and configuration, from Blaxploitation to films of Turkey to TV cop shows from the 50's. If it was ever on video, it's at Scarecrow. Great, friendly, knowledgeable staff are always there to help too.
