Seattle has many good parks. Lincoln Park is an often under appreciated park in West Seattle. The park has numerous trails, for casual walking and hiking. There are good jogging and biking options, and beautiful Puget Sound views. There is also a terrific salt water pool (heated). The pool is very popular with kids and has slides and diving boards for older kids. Younger kids will have a ball too. The pool itself overlooks Puget Sound, right above the beach. Thus the views are really great while swimming and enjoying a lazy day.

Piecora's NY is the best New York style pizza in Seattle. The thin crust, texture of the dough, seasoning of the sauce, and olive oil and cheese are done just right. The combos and toppings are authentic to NY style too (as opposed to the yummy but out there yuppie combinations common to Seattle and California). The restaurant combines an appealingly low key location with a very Seattle tattooed and pierced. Most baked dinner entrées are good too.

The Woodland Park Zoo is a terrific place for families to spend time together. Most animal exhibits are in relatively open spaces. There are everything from lions and tigers and bears, oh my...to various primates and birds like eagles and raptors. The zoo does a good job of educating and involving kids in aspects of wildlife care and conservation. There are also pony rides, hands on exhibits, and soon a restored antique carousel.

The Seattle Aquarium is a good rainy day choice to spend time at with younger kids. For a maritime city surrounded by water, this aquarium is somewhat dated and smallish. But the exhibits are well arranged for toddlers and younger kids. Many interesting things are set right at their height. And there are lots of hands on options for little kids to explore. The river otters, jellyfish and octopus are always a hit with the little ones. Hopefully Seattle will commit itself to building an updated, world class aquarium like they have in Vancouver, B.C. or Monterrey, CA.

Seattle is fairly dull architecturally. So it was a more than welcome surprise to see our old concrete box of a library replaced with the beautiful, modern new Rem Koolhas designed work of art. The building is fun and interesting to explore. Rooms and corridors, even the restrooms, are filled with color and shape and light. The entire building showers visitors with light and airy views of downtown and the sound. Plus, it will make your kids think the library is the coolest place to be.

Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium is a good destination for families with younger kids. The zoo itself doesn't have that many animals. But there are polar bears, monkeys, reindeer, foxes, owls, etc. The aquarium (both are included in one price) has some great stuff though. There are beluga whales, walruses, penguins, dolphins. There is also an excellent part of the aquarium devoted to sea life of the Puget Sound. There are even separate tanks with various local displays, like sea life of the San Juan Islands, the coast, Vashon, etc. There is also a "fun zone" area for little kids that is very popular and has water games, a petting zoo, etc. All for under $9. Plus, the location is very beautiful, in a tree covered park with nice views of the sound and the Olympics.

Baby's are small. But they come with numerous available options and. After a while, even the relatively sane new parent can get confused over what you need or what might work with your individual child. Consignment stores are a great way to get different things at much less than retail. This is a good place to find highchairs, strollers, kids' clothes, etc at very good prices.

Valentine's is a barber shop for men in their 20's, basically. Also for some teens, maybe for some younger 30's guys. It's a great place to get a cut and hang with other young guys. You can actually talk like guys, watch sports, shoot some pool. listen to hip hop. This is as cool as getting a haircut in Seattle is likely to get.

Greg's Geenlake Cycle is a really good bike shop. They carry everything from tricycles to high end touring bikes. They have helmets from infant sizes to big Charlie Brown headed adults like me. They have every kind of accessory, from shoes to lights to speedometers. The staff is friendly and very helpful. They also do great tune ups and repairs, and are mindful of getting you out the door to enjoy the sun.
