earthen fire is a great little place on wickendon street where you can paint your own pottery. i really recommend for a free day with friends or with kids, because it can make a couple hours just fly by. there's a studio fee for using the paints and getting your piece fired and such, and then there's a fee for whatever piece you decide to paint, which varies depending on size and intricacy.

i got my laundry done here once because i was in a real time crunch and didn't have time to do my dirty laundry, and it was so expensive! you have to pay by the pound, and who knew dirty laundry was so heavy?? anyway, the prices are actually pretty average, but my suggestion is to just do your own laundry. it's a lot cheaper. the dry cleaning is also average priced. great location for brown students.

i love this little rinky-dink store that is below ground on thayer street. it sells all those things that you alwasy wondered about where they were being sold, like whoopie cushions and fake vomit. they also have the most random collection of tshirts for sale. everything is dirt cheap, too. i love to come in here and look around. it makes for a great selection of gag gifts.

ok, so the metro mart is a little funkier and a little smaller than store 24 or cvs, but i like to support the underdog, so i always check here first. the prices are definitely comparable to those of store-24. they have a decent selection of sodas, snacks, gums, candy bars, and even ice cream. so if you don't want to pay four dollars for a scoop of ice cream at coldstone, hop over to the metro mart and get a whole pint for less than that.

so i usually run by the runcible spoon every morning and finally i came to the conclusion that i had to go in and check it out because the stuff on display was always so cool. so i went in, and i was glad i did, because this place is great. it's one of those places where you can find great gifts for absolutely anyone. it's mostly home goods, like kitchen ware, linens, and gadgets. check it out!

spiritus fermenti is a dirty looking subterranean liquor store underneath the meeting street cafe. since it's right on college hill, it has great location for needy brown students without the luxury of having a car. which is probably why their prices are so high. the selection isn't that great either. if you do go, try to plan in advance, because cold beer costs an arm and a leg, whereas non-refrigerated beer is not too bad.

i have only ever bought beer at campus fine wines, and it was very moderately priced. the selection is pretty good for beer, and also for wine and liquor. it makes for a great stop on the way to a byob place on wickendon. the prices are definitely better than those of spiritus because it is further off college hill.

eastside marketplace is the worst grocery store i have ever been to. they have the high prices of whole foods, but not nearly as high quality food. if you want inexpensive normal food, go to stop and shop or shaws. if you want expensive gourmet or specialty foods, go to whole foods. but don't go to eastside marketplace and pay a lot for normal food.

Pie In The Sky is a great little shop on Thayer Street that sells funky, arty, and also very elegant jewelry. They offer a great selection, and even if you don't find anything you like, which is unlikely, you can even design and make your own. That's always a fun activity, of course, but definitely check out the stuff they already mad, because some of it is really great.

zuzu's petal's is one of those places that gives thayer street it's unique charm and local flair. it is a great little boutique, with very trendy dresses, some everyday dresses, and some more special occasion. their inventory moves quickly, though, and they often don't have every size because once someone buys it, it's gone. so it's fun to check out but i would bet my life on finding something there. a litttle pricey.
