Underappreciated Ethnic Gem

Saturday, August 20, 2005
I used to make my way up to Buford Highway just to get some Vietnamese Pho soup. Now I just drive to downtown Decatur and make my way to Viet Chateau. Viet Chateau's food, especially its Pho, is every bit as good as the eateries you'll find on Buford Highway. But it also manages to give a fine dining experience with prices comparable to a Buford Highway dive. The atmosphere has a quiet elegance and the service is polite and attentive. The vermicelli noodles with charbroiled pork is my favorite dish, but I haven't had a bad meal here. The servings here aren't always huge, which is not a bad thing. Especially considering that it leaves room for their dessert specialty--fried banana with three flavors of homemade ice cream.
