There is really nothing wrong with Comix Experience. So why do I feel that way whenever I go in there? Maybe it's the rather surly staff, who look like they would rather spit in your eye than help you. Maybe it's the lay out with window displays, that makes it feel more like a boutique than a comic book shop. I can't fault them for anything, they carry all the current releases, plus they have a small selection of back issues. And heck, they had Matt Wagner, Trace Bellieu and Jim Mallon do signings there, so they can't be that bad, right? Maybe it's the extremely clean, uncluttered displays that just don't fit my narrow view of a comic book shop. Whatever, they are worth it to support the industry, in the very least.

This market sells a small selection of groceries, more so than a convenience store, but not as wide as a major chain grocer. There is a limited amount of fresh produce, and an extensive liquor and wine selection. What makes this a great store is the hours of operation, and the staff. The store is open past midnight almost every day, perfect for night owl shopping. The staff are friendly and chatty once you get to know them. They are a family-run business, and fit well within the lower Haight neighborhood.

I have never gone wrong using Relles Florist. I have used them on many occasions to send flowers, and the arrangements are always original, beautiful, and well received. They are flexible enough to work within your price range, customize your gift cards, and make deliveries within a particular time frame. They don't make jokes or comments or even change the tone of their voice when you customize your gift card, so you always feel confident sending your sentiments along with your gift. They always deliver promptly and professionally. They take orders over the phone or in person.

Campus Liquor Wine & Food keep night owl's hours, like most other liquor stores. But they are open later and on more days of the week than the national chains, and are often open past when the grocery stores close. They have a large selection of wines, and their prices are not too high for the convenience. They also carry snacks and groceries, much like you'd find at a service station. But the owners are what make this store special. They work there all the time, and are friendly. Once you get to know them, they will chat with you, much like the old small town grocers.

One of the great things about East West is that it is just down the street from Borders Books and Music. Why is that nice? Because Borders employees realize that their selection of New Age, Metaphysical, and Eastern Philosophy is not nearly as extensive as East West, and refers customers to them on a regular basis. East West carries a lot of books you won't find in the chains, which makes it the first stop if you want to explore your spirituality. They also carry an assortment of trinkets, statuettes, and the like.

Hein and company is basically a two story store dedicated to used books. True, there is a coffee shop located in the foyer, but it's almost an afterthought. They carry a wide selection of used books, and will pay cash or credit for books. They have a clearance/budget table every day. The staff claim to "know where every book is" which is no small feat. I haven't put that to the test, but they do know their stock. You can even get rarities, like the old Oz books by Baum. A lot of their stock is quite inexpensive, for the stuff that is still in print or not popular.

I should have figured something like that would happen. Fourth of July, and we want to use the spa that we got with our new house. Of course, we haven't used it since we bought the house, so we have to clean it, shock it, etc. And all the pool supply places are closed. Except one. Leslie's came through for me when I needed to replace a couple of parts, so they're tops in my book. They have a wide assortment of parts and supplies, and they are more than happy to look at pictures and advise homeowners. And did I mention they're open on hollidays?

These are not "quick printers." They are a full service printing establishment, capable of 150 lpi on whatever you need. I used them for a couple graphic design jobs that required magazine-quality printing. They are friendly and flexible, although their graphic designer had a bit of trouble understanding that high-resolution text could be a graphic, and not editable as text. Don't know why she would want to, but oh well. Other than this minor hiccup, they are reliable and reasonably priced. Free ink color every day of the week!

Goodie Tuchews does one thing, and does it well: they bake cookies. You can get them in a whole variety of different ways, and it is the only place I know of where you can get white chocolate chip cookies without macadamia nuts. There are two sizes of cookie, small and large. Large is around three to four inches in diameter, and small is more like two to three. You can also get leftovers (while they last) in bargain bags that are an assortment of different flavors of small cookies. Now the most important part: The cookies are delicious!

All the names are apropos. This place has one thing going for it: the location. Nestled within walking distance of Record Archive, Empire Comics' customers are probably soccer moms or U of R students who haven't learned that they should take the MAG shuttle and hit Comics Etc. Empire has a good selection of new comics, so if that's all you want, and don't want to save money on a subscription, then Empire is fine and convenient. However, the back issues and other used items they sell are prohibitively priced. Add to this the downright rude staff, and you have a store that should be avoided if possible.
