The USS Turner Joy was involved in the now infamous Tonkin Gulf Incident during the Vietnam War. Now, you can board the ship and explore it from deck to engine room. Your visit is guided by onboard volunteers that are involved in the ongoing effort to restore the ship, and they are great storytellers willing to tell you all they know. Visiting the USS Turner Joy as part of the other highlights of Bremerton makes a great day trip from Seattle!

This little gem rises above the other tourist traps on the waterfront, and distinguishes itself with high quality fare. The alder smoked salmon and halibut is outstanding, and the chips are like none other I have ever seen. They take full potatoes, slice them lengthwise, and fry them up. They are worth a trip down to the pier alone! Score a table outside on the pier if the weather is right, and enjoy some tasty food in a fabulous setting.

I was skeptical when I was told I was being dragged along to the Museum of Glass. How interesting could glass be? Well, I was surprised. The galleries are filled with interesting and beautiful objects which I had to keep reminding myself were made from glass. What really captured my interest however was the "hot shop," a live workshop where you can watch fabulous glass creations being made. The building that houses the museum also deserves special mention: it is an architectural marvel, and well worth a visit on its own terms. The Museum of Glass is a unique and unforgettable destination.

We were drawn to the Washington State History Museum for a special exhibit on Everest, and didn't really anticipate how interesting the other parts of the museum would be. The museum is housed in a character building that imparts a lot of atmosphere. The history of Washington is told in a very interesting and creative manner, that easily engaged all of us. Make sure if you check out the fantastic collection of glass at the neighboring Union Station when you visit.

Looking for a place to eat, we decided to check out Beau Thai (I liked the name). The service was efficient, if not a little a cold. The decor is fairly plain and unexciting. We tried three dishes, and found them all somewhat lacking. The flavors were underdeveloped, although portion sizes were generous. Considering how many great Thai restaurants there are in Portland, I would look elsewhere next time for my Thai fix.

If you find yourself on the Oregon Coast, or are looking for an interesting excursion from Portland, check out the Tillamook Cheese Factory. The visitor center offers informative displays and video presentations on all the steps that go into making cheese. Of course, the highlight is being able to see the factory assembly line, and the overhead viewing areas give you a great vantage point. The tasting room gives you a chance to try all the different cheeses, and don't miss the chance to get a fantastic ice cream cone on the way out. I never knew I was so interested in cheese before a visit to the Tillamook factory!

Make the effort to get off the I-5 and visit this gem in Centralia. Visiting the Olympic Club Pub is like stepping back in time—the place has the look and feel of a bygone era. The room is dark and comfortable, and the food is delicious. I recommend the hot wings which are outstanding, and the burgers are fantastic. Of course, since this a McMenamins, there is a selection of great micro brews on tap. If time permits, check out the funky theatre that is part of the hotel.

Of all the McMenamins properties I have visited, Edgefield is perhaps the most unique. You could turn a visit into a day trip. The gardens that surround the main building are beautiful, and worth a stroll. Once you get your appetite up, you can choose from a variety of eating and drinking places. We chose to eat outside on the patio at the Power Station. The food was basic but delicious pub fare, and although the service was on the slow side, we didn't really mind as we enjoyed the incredible atmosphere. Edgefield is not too be missed.

The Rheinlander is one of my family's favorite restaurants, and we seem to always leave with a very full belly, and a big smile on our faces. Each of the small, intimate rooms has a different decor, and a roaming accordion player help create an atmosphere that is part restaurant, part theme park. The food is dependable, if not outstanding—but, you won't leave hungry! Meals include fondue, soup or salad, and fresh rolls. Popular for birthdays and celebrations, don't wait for a special event to visit. You will have a great time!

The star attraction at the Evergreen Aviation Museum is definitely the Spruce Goose, Howard Hughes' famous jumbo airplane. Being able to get up close to such a pivotal piece of aviation history is exciting, but I was pleased to realize that the Evergreen Aviation Museum is so much more than just the Spruce Goose. They have a great collection of aircraft, and if you time your visit right, you can get a guided tour by volunteers that used to fly the historical aircraft on display. Visiting this museum makes a great day trip from Portland, and will be enjoyed by the whole family.
