If you find yourself on the Oregon Coast, or are looking for an interesting excursion from Portland, check out the Tillamook Cheese Factory. The visitor center offers informative displays and video presentations on all the steps that go into making cheese. Of course, the highlight is being able to see the factory assembly line, and the overhead viewing areas give you a great vantage point. The tasting room gives you a chance to try all the different cheeses, and don't miss the chance to get a fantastic ice cream cone on the way out. I never knew I was so interested in cheese before a visit to the Tillamook factory!

One-of-a-kind experience! Don't miss it!

The Experience Music Project is a unique museum like no other in the world. Admittedly, I'm a huge music fan, but I think even the casual fan will easily find they can spend hours exploring the EMP. The galleries are filled with incredible memorabilia, and the museum audio guide (definitely worth the nominal extra cost) really brings the items on display alive. Sound Lab is an amazing opportunity to learn how to play guitar, drums, or keyboards in 10 minutes or less. Make sure you don't miss the theatre on the bottom level that screens interesting short films featuring the artists showcased in the galleries. Admission is not cheap, but the value is well worth the cost.

I've done the Underground Tour twice, and found it interesting each time, although the corny humor and canned jokes were a little grating the second time around. You don't actually get to see very much on the tour, but just the fact that you get clued in to what is underneath your feet as you walk around town makes it worth the admission. If you time in Seattle is limited though, I wouldn't say this attraction is a must see.

The Fun Forest Amusement Park at Seattle Center is greater than the sum of its parts. Taken one by one, the collection of rides here might be viewed as disappointing. However, together they make a fun destination in the shadow of the Space Needle. The dated 1960s vibe contributes a certain kitschiness to the park which is actually pretty appealing. Young kids especially will have a great time.

I have always enjoyed visiting the SAAM, and I really believe that the experience is enhanced by the fantastic setting in Volunteer Park and the fact that the building that allows in so much natural light. The objects on display are unquestionably beautiful, but I often wish more context was provided for what is being exhibited. So many of this objects have religious or cultural significance that go beyond simple aesthetic beauty, and sadly this is missing from the interpretation offered by the museum. That said, a visit will certainly leave you feeling calm and satisfied.

Before the dawn of Barnes & Noble, this was considered a book superstore. It continues to thrive by concentrating on great service and by offering excellent author events. Elliot Bay has a fantastic program of author visits, public lectures, and discussions. It is clear that the store staff actually read books, and are a great resource for a recommendation and buying advice. They might not always be the cheapest, but this is still a great place to shop!

If you are looking for an alternative viewpoint on an array of issues and topics, look no farther then Left Bank Books. This small store at Pike Place Market stocks titles I have not seen on the shelves anywhere else. The staff is outstanding at guiding you towards books that will interest you, and unlike the large corporate store up the street, I think these guys have actually read the books they are recommending! A great place to browse and shop.

Spend a few hours getting lost in the city of books
What can you say about a place like Powell's City of Books? Its sheer size is impressive...and a little intimidating. Fortunately you can pick up a map at then entrance, and the store is color coded...
What can you say about a place like Powell's City of Books? Its sheer size is impressive...and a little intimidating. Fortunately you can pick up a map at then entrance, and the store is color coded so you can find your way around quite easily. I really like that they shelve used books alongside new titles, so you are offered a real choice. This is a great place to spend a few hours browsing.

A nice alternative to the Apple Store
I'm a huge fan of Apple computers, and I really like shopping at Apple's retail stores. That said, a few months ago I found myself shopping for a case for my new Powerbook, and I really wasn't happy...
