The Getty museum is one of those places where I will take all my visiting friends new to Los Angeles. On a clear day, you have panoramic views from downtown LA to the beach. While I never really seems to spend much time actually looking at the art, I truly enjoy the architecture and the gardens.
The museum is very open to kids running around and "learning" in the hallways about art. They have family programs and a special kid's exploration room. They also have periodic music and dance performances in an amazing hall where the balcony seats could hear a pin drop on the stage clearly.
They have an amazing restaurant onsite which shares the same views and the food is excellent, however you'll probably pay about $50 per person with food and drinks.
Entrance to the museum is free, however parking is $7. Parking is located at the bottom of the hill and visitors ride a tram uphill to the museum.

The LA times ran an article about soba noodles and highlighted how great this authentic noodle house is. The owner makes the noodles fresh every morning. Don't expect a lot of variety, but the atmosphere is great--cozy, with jazz playing in the background. It makes this a great find for Angelenos.
I had the seiro soba noodles (made from a special white buckwheat) with shrimp and scallop tempura. I ordered an extra large (supersized meal) which filled my belly perfectly. We also ordered an appetizer of dark seaweed with ponzu sauce which was very tasty.
Everything seemed very fresh in this little restaurant. If you're looking for a change, check this place out.

The Zimmer Museum offers hands-on experience for kids to step inside a ambulance and sit in a wheelchair, play dress-up on a real stage with an ongoing camera, fly a plane, play waiter or waitress in a restaurant, step inside a synagogue, play with a water puzzle, see a wall-size world map, etc. They also offer music classes and art classes, however they fill-up quickly and can be overcrowded at times. There's plenty of stimulation can be overwhelming. Personally, I think this could be a nice place to take your kid a few times a year, but i wouldn't recommend an annual membership unless you've got a community of friends who attend regularly.

The Huntington Library and Gardens in Pasadena has one of the best children's gardens around. Kids can run through a 30 foot tunnel, make music by dropping pebbles, experience mist and rain, see a rainbow, splash in the stream and play with water fountains. Beautifully set-up, the Huntington has done a spectacular job in making a very child-friendly garden. Be warned, however, you kids will get wet! So, bring an extra set of clothes and plan a picnic for a full experience.
One a month on the first Thursday, admission is free to the public. Otherwise, there's an entrance fee for non-members.

Many people think of Japanese food as sushi only, but it's more than that. The Sawtelle kitchen offers great dinners. Don't bring the kids, though as it's a small restaurant without a lot of wiggle room. I prefer the salmon a wasabi-flavored mashed potatoes. I think they had some nice desserts, too. I don't think they take reservations. it's first come, first serve. also, if you had your heart set on Japanese food and get there only to find out the line is too long, there's a whole bunch of other Japanese restaurants within walking distance on Sawtelle.

Anytime I have out of town guests who want to eat something different, I take them to Versailles, a cuban restaurant off Venice Blvd in Palms/Culver City area. They also have two other locations that I know of--one off La Cienega and pico and the other off sepulveda in Manhattan Beach.
Their signature dishes are the garlic chicken or the roasted pork. You will probably sweat garlic for a week, but it's worth it. The line outside always looks long, but it moves fast. Inside the place is very casual...you can bring just a friend or the baseball team and they will still accomodate. Fried yucca is also a favorite.
Oh, don't leave your leftovers in the car. Put them in the trunk or your car will also smell like garlic for a week!

Jack Sprat's Grille has great food and a great name. Located near the Westside Pavillion, it offers your gourmet brunch, hamburgers, omelets, etc. The last time I went the waiter was a little slow, but it's a cute cafe and there's a great bakery down the road. Parking can be a little annoying sometimes as you have to find a spot on the street and Pico is often very busy. I also remember a father bringing his young daughter for a father-daughter brunch, so it's relatively kid-friendly. Just don't bring a stroller as space is tight.

This neighboorhood joint attracts people for it's great atmosphere --reggae playing in the background, outdoor seating, natural foods and no lines! While the store section is small, you can find all the basic essentials. The cafe food is good and you can sit and chat with friends for hours without being harassed. Don't get overly-ambitious with the food, though as it can be hit or miss. I mostly like it because it has a great neighborhood feel and it has healthy food instead of fast food.

Flap Jack's a great kid's used store. Reasonably priced, they have clothes, books, toys, strollers, shoes, safety gates, etc. It's a small store, but you often find quality items. If you see something in the store, you should just get it as turnover of items goes pretty quickly. Another great thing about this store is that it's located a couple stores down from Children's Book World.
Flap Jack's also purchase products if you have things you want to get rid of. i think they used to give cash, but I'm not sure if they still do that. They might only give store credit these days.
