Tuesday Morning is a great store if you can keep an open mind. This is a store where designer close-outs come to die. That can mean very good savings for you! I have purchased some great items here (my favorite being a Donna Karan bedcover that I paid less than half price for and a leather journal I bought as a gift for a friend that I then saw in a museum store in Chicago for five times the price). It's really hit or miss, however. You can get on their mailing list and receive snail mail fliers alerting you to upcoming arrivals. Most times, you just have to get lucky, but when you do, it's oh, so sweet shopping.

Chico's may not be for the 20-something set, but it's a great store for women of all other ages. They have a classic style, while still maintaining a trendy look. Best of all, no stigma of sizes (they use 1, 2, 3). They have a wonderful line of wrinkle-proof travel clothing (yes, in black) that I have worn so many times, it isn't even funny, and they still look great. They sell great jewelry and scarves, too. I have not been as satisfied with my online shopping experience with them. I always get much better customer service in person. I like this Old Orchard store a lot, but I have to tell you, I was on vacation in Miami, and stopped in because I needed another suitcase (ok, too much shopping, but that's another story) and ended up buying not only a travel bag, but three other pieces of clothing. If you don't know Chico's, you are missing out.

I have used this cab company for many years, and I have to say, I have had plenty of early trips to the airport in my time. I have never had a bad trip with Norshore, which is not what I would say my experience has been with Chicago-based cabs. They always meet my early morning needs, and you can call them when you arrive at O'Hare or Midway, and they will take you safely home to Evanston (or other northern areas) for a flat fee, a huge savings. Kudos to their great service. I hope everyone has the same great cab experience from them that I've had.

Paper Source is a wonderful store, with several locations in the Chicagoland area, but my favorite is in Evanston. Ok, the Oak Park store is very nice, too. Paper Source is one of those old-fashioned-idea-new-take-on-it kind of places. They carry load of clever cards, lots of sold-by-the-sheet papers that are truly beautiful, and many things related to paper, including pens, notebooks, ribbon, and so on. Paper Source offers lots of great classes, so get on their mailing list next time you visit. There is so much great stuff here, you just might find yourself longing for the good old days when people actually still wrote letters instead of emails.

Although this store is a wee bit overpriced, I like the friendly staff and great selection. It's perfectly located, just steps from the Paulina El stop on Lincoln and down the street from Whole Foods and Dinkel's Bakery, so you can get some other shopping done if you're in the area. There are lots of great examples of jewelry in the store, and you can take classes here, too. There's a pretty big selection of beats and fittings, including beads sold both individually and by the strand. You can probably find beads cheaper, but it's got a nice vibe, and if you live in the Lakeview neighborhood, that's even better.

Tom Thumb does have an amazing selection of all things related to crafts, from beads to model building to stickers to paints to rubber stamps, and a thousand other craft-related materials. The very big downside to this store, however, is that it is a perpetual state of disarray. You often have to climb over boxes, go down the aisle another way or just plain forget your search. The staff is not particularly helpful in my experience. However, in the Evanston area, they are the most complete store in terms of sheer volume of craft materials. If you can, I'd shop at Pearl. Tom Thumb could do itself a big favor by cleaning the joint up.

This is my idea of the perfect bakery. Well, maybe not always perfect because so many people love this place that they tend to run out of their best sellers, like the peanut butter pie. Can you find something else as delicious? Sure. They have a small cafe with tables and they serve up simple luncheon fare (sandwiches and soup) that's pretty good, too. The cappuccinos are great, and staff is helpful. It's pricey, but you get a top quality baked good, be that tart, napoleon, or just a cute cookie. Highly recommended.

Salt and Pepper was always a famous landmark for me looking out of the El train window. I always wondered what the place was like, but never went. Then, one day, quite unexpectedly I was in the neighborhood with a friend, we were both hungry, and thought, why not? I have to say, it wasn't bad. I had scrambled eggs with green peppers...not your usual entrée item. Ok, it's not weird, but when was the last time you saw that listed as an item on a menu? My friend had a veggie dish, and we both agreed that we would go back sometime. The only drawback that I saw was that the place is very, very small, so you need to be lucky to get a spot. Service wasn't outstanding, but passable. Overall, I'd say it's probably a little better than what you'd expect from a view on the El.

This is the most unlikely of stores to be so very popular, but I have never been to Dave's Rock Shop and not found a crowd there. What do they sell? Fossils, geodes, precious gems for jewelry-making, and jewelry. The selection is fantastic for anyone who likes to make jewelry, and there is a range of prices. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Its a strange, if friendly, cast of characters who frequent Dave's, but that makes it just that much more unique. Great fun for the kid in your life, even if that's you.

I did love the food, so you won't hear me complaining about that. In fact the food was fantastic. Like most top quality chefs, Charlie Trotter's kitchen knows what they are doing. I love the fact that the meal is decided for you, and appreciated that the waiter checked to ensure that no food allergies would affect your enjoyment. I also liked being able to go online and look at the menu ahead of the evening's repast. The dining room is subdued so that you can concentrate on your dining experience. However, they do not get a 5-star rating from me because when I went, the waiter poured wine from our table's bottle into the glasses of the table next to ours, and then replaced the missing wine with a glass of wine from the bar. I have to say, I am glad that I had the Charlie Trotter experience, but for my money, Grant Atchez has it all over Charlie. I loved Trio and now Alinea.
