Every film buff in Seattle is aware of Scarecrow video- it's not your traditional rental place. If you are looking for the obscure, the independent or the just plain weird this is the spot. The store is located in the U-District and the staff is knowledgable. The draw back is that most good rentals are due like 24hrs later but they still cost $4.

Try the tofu with soft egg rice. Amazing! The servers always laugh at me when I order this side dish as my main entree but my Chinese friend claim it is because the egg rice is the Chinese equivalent of Chicken noodle soup- something mom makes you when you're under the weather. The restaurant is also open late.

The SAM is most notable for it's tendancy to cater to the eccentric. First Thursday offers discount rates so the students and the average joe can afford some culture. They also have special events like the recent Dorkbot lecture, which featured some of the most dangerous examples of art I've ever seen. Way to go SAM.

This preschool/Daycare is run out of a church basement and is a good option if you are in a pinch. As a nanny I've picked up kids from the drop-in and the women who work there seem compassionate and very secure- making sure to check my ID before handing over toddlers to me. Some daycares are too trusting. Also, they try to teach the children independence from a young age.

The Showbox is my favorite venue to see shows in Seattle (though I hear good things about the Firehouse). The place is a lot less smoky than El Corozone (or whatever they are calling it these days) and they have some pretty decent bands there, including the most rocking Mighty Mighty Bosstones show on the coast. Check it out.

This restaurant has a rare charm to it. Add to that a killer chicken fried steak and I call it good eats. The one draw back to the Blue Onion is that it is located on a not-so-pretty stretch of Roosevelt between car dealerships. But the neighborhoods behind the retaurant are worth walking through and could make a decent date of it.

The merits of Aladdin's are threefold- 1) an awesome gyro (addictive really) B) free water and 3) open very late. One of the few shops open into the wee hours, Aladdin's serves food til 3am. Oh, and I forgot to add affordable. And they round all of the prices to the nearest quarter which makes sense to me.

Gasworks park used to be an old refinery of some sort- and though it's been closed down, cleaned up(some what) and turned into a park, large hunks of rusted machinery are still visable. Don't worry, they're behind fences. The stark contrast between brilliant green and rust red is perfect. Also, a great vantage point to view the city from and right on the water. The sunsets are breath taking.

I never go out to bars late at night on a party night- can't stand the smoke and the jostling. But I really enjoy Teddy's on an afternoon . There's a jukebox stoked with the usual, beer on tap, a lowkey bar staff and best of all- 50cent pool. A great place to just chill at, especially on a hot summer afternoon. They open at one or two everyday and start serving happy hour foods at 6pm. Also, they play all the sports games on big screens if that's your thing.
