Bobby's Hobbies, very new to the Alaska Junction in West Seattle is a very noticeable contribution. Bobby's Hobbies specializes in radio controlled race cars, but the store also doubles as free entertainment for anybody, as the small parking lot next to the store was converted into an outdoor drag strip for the radio cars. Passersby can stop and watch as older men and middle school boys race their creations, creating spills and chills to rival the best of Nascar. When you see a model car limping to the sidelines with the axel flopping off, yet still trying, desperately to compete, a little part inside of you roots for the little guy.
The store also features some snacks.

Now that this shop has moved from Pioneer Square to the "Sanitary Public Market" I believe it will actually be noticed a little more, and probably get more even more business. I love that there is an entire store dedicated to nothing but maps and map related items, and very much like a bookstore you can get a little lost in the different kinds of maps, map games and buy a t-shirt to remember it by.

I like Lien because they are a small clinic, and really understand just how important pets are to people. When I brought in my housecat, who is pretty darn far, instead of getting scolded the vet acknowledged that some house cats just do get fat and it wasn't a big deal. That's not to say they don't take real medical problems seriously, just that they have a realistic view of things. Once when I had to have a pet put down, they sent a personalized card signed by the staff. It is the attention to small details, like the correct spelling of your pets name on records, that really sets them apart.

This is a new store, and I hope they do ok. However, i don't quite get the name of it, and inside was an odd mishmash of garden and cooking supplies and candles. They had some good things, but most of it was things I had seen elsewhere. They did seem to have more green colored items than your average store. Still, I'm not quite getting it.

Want a funky and hip place just to get a simple haircut? The Westside Barber shop, located between the California Junction and Admiral, is just such a place. A staff of mainly cute girls are there to provide basic cuts at reasonable rates. Walk ins are fine and street parking is available.

Y'know the Comic Book Guy on the Simpsons? This is his shop. It is heavy on the Marvel/Figurine bent that I'm not really into, but I go for the small alternative comics collection, and the large bins of cool movie posters. I got a great one from "The Blob" there once. They also sell actual screenplays, and black and white star glossies. Golden Age Collectibles is not a destination, but if you are wandering about the Pike Place Market and like comics, you should make a point to stop in . . . they do have a lot of stuff.

The problem with upholstery is that it is always expensive, but at least with Murphy's they have a great selection of fabrics and know how to make aunt Irma's couch from 1963 look better than it was ever meant to. The store also has small items for gifts, furniture ready to buy and, oddly, a small area with vintage clothing and purses in the back. Recently I purchased a very cool lightswitch cover there.

West Seattle Nursery often gets comments that it is overpriced. I don't think it is ridiculously overpriced, although it is a little, but for a local, well located nursery, they have a pretty good selection of plants and small trees, and a large selection of pretty pots and planters. Generally, staff is friendly and knowledgeable and it is a fun place to browse.
