Paul's looks on the outside like a regular shoe store, albeit heavy on the clogs, but they also have a full-service shoe repair on the premises, too. Their selection of shoes is great, if you like funky European brands you won't see everywhere. They've got mens and womens shoes, socks, and some really cute handbags. Not going to win any awards for low prices, but they do have sales and markdowns, which helps.

Now that I'm older, I'm much less tolerant of shoes that are cute but painful. But at the same time, I absolutely will not wear ugly shoes. I just won't. Good thing there's Footwear, Etc. While they do have their share of ugly shoes that just scream "orthopedic!", they also have quite a few brands that feature really cute stuffL Josef Siebel, Clarks (some are cute, anyway), etc. The shoes ain't cheap, though--but they do have sales and coupons that take the sting off. I tend to shop for off-season clearance shoes, which brings the price down considerably.

I just love browsing at Letter Perfect. They have a tremendous selection of unusual cards (i.e. not your usual Hallmark variety). They also sell great photo albums, wrapping paper, and package adornments. They also have a really vast selection of custom invitations and announcements. I wish I'd gone there for my wedding announcements, but I discovered them too late ;-) Don't miss the fun tchotchkes near the cash register--impulse purchase central!

These guys do it all, but for some reason they've always left me cold. Their asthetic is nice, they use Aveda products, and everyone there seems capable, but when my usual hairdresser and waxing lady left, I decided to go somewhere else. Partly because of the price, but partly too because, like I said, something about the place feels sterile to me.

Amazing jewelry--mostly modern, 14k and semiprecious stuff from artisan jewelers. These are the kinds of pieces you'll get compliments on again and again. I'm not a jewel-a-holic, but every time I go in I find something to drool over. I've even resorted to "discreetly" putting their card on my husband's desk, hint hint.

I love the clothes at J Foss. I think most of them are European designers, but wherever they're from, they tend towards a modern, funky yet classy style that you won't see on everybody else around town. BUT, the prices tend to be really high--$250 for a skirt, that kind of thing. I head straight for the sale rack when I go in.

The Club has pretty much everything you want in a health club--fitness classes, yoga, weights, cardio equipment, spinning, basketball, racquetball. It's not fancy, but the nice thing is that you won't get a whole singles scene thing going on--just a good workout. They charge a lot less than the Y, too--about $50/month for a single. The only drawback is that they don't have a pool, but if that doesn't bother you, then this place is great.

Blink and you'll miss it, but these guys have a nice selection of fish, fish food, plants, and pond accessories. They're right on El Camino, so you have to park in the back. That's good though, because they have a nice display pond out back where you can see their koi and plants in their "natural" environment. They also have an installation company, and can refer you to maintenance people.

Carolyn Whealan-Andersson did a really nice job for us. She spent the time to find out what we wanted (and what we thought we wanted, which can be another thing entirely!) and then designed a really well-thought-out plan which included planting, irrigation, lighting, and hardscape. She will also manage your installation if that's in your budget (sadly, it was not for us). But I can't say enough good things about her design skills!
