When I finally took action to get my window sills repainted, I was somewhat dismayed by the bids I was getting - touching up 14 exterior window sills was going to cost me $2k from most people.... not mention a wait of at least 2-3 weeks, some places 2 months. Enter Jefco painting, whose bid was approximate half that of anybody else, whose quoted materials where identical to most others, and whose availability let them start in 3 days and be finished 2 days after that. I went with them, and they did a great job.

When I started looking for a house, I had a bit of an odd schedule. Specifically, I had about 1 week to win a bid on a house and start the month-long closing process, or instead renew my lease. Nit and his partner Andy Chapman helped me out tremendously. For a full week, we must have looked at an average of 12 houses a night, and that was the short list they filtered down for me! If that's not hard work for somebody looking for an entry level house, I don't know what is. When I found my future house, they expertly turned a bidding war into me getting the place for asking price.

Though only 30 or so blocks north of it, Lighting Supply, Inc. is everything that it's far more well-known competitor, Seattle Lighting, is not. Which is to say that Lighting Supply is (relatively!) cheap, has a very friendly and helpful staff, is willing to work with you on any job, no matter how small, and has nothing of the pretentious air to be found in it's southern competitor.

I admit it: I don't look like I'm trying to light a $500,000 home, or a corporate office building. Maybe that's why, when on any of the several times I've walked into this store, it's been very hard to get the attention of any of the staff, and when I do, they have been uniformly snooty. And the prices they quoted me? Uh.... yeah. No thank you.
It's not *all* bad. Some of their fixtures really are pretty nice.
Of course, you can get them for about half the price 30 blocks north at Lighting Supply, Inc.

Scarecrow Video is a rare find. Don't think of it as a video rental store.... think of it as a video archive that rents it selections. Sure, Scarecrow carries the new releases too, but that's not why you come here. The real draw to this place is their selection - and when I say selection, I'm talking 2 stories, completely packed. If it was published, it's probably here. Some of the hard-to-replace films carry stiff deposits - $400 to borrow Black Devil Doll From Hell, for instance. But the staff knows their films, and if you want something hard to find (or not yet officially released in the US yet) Scarecrow is a good place to find it.

Rain City Video is a small chain of video stores around Seattle. Frankly, ever since getting on Netflix only rarely do I visit video stores anymore. But when I was, Rain City Video was a nice one to go to. A helpful staff could make suggestions, or, you could read any of their many handwritten notes next to the selections on the shelves. They also serve movie popcorn, if you want, which I was never a fan of. But it's a nice touch anyway.

PCC doesn't focus on cheap, though it's prices aren't really all that bad. It doesn't focus on variety, though it has most things you'll need. It doesn't focus on having everything in stock year-round, though it's suprsingly good at even that.
What PPC does focus on is healthy, organic, locally grown food. It's more expensive than what you'll find most other places, but it's better for you, not to mention better for the environment.
PCC Members ($60 lifetime fee) get monthly discounts.

If you take the cozy trendy atmosphere of whole foods, then stretch it out to fit in a costco warehouse, and then combine a selection that you might expect if Trader Joe's and PCC merged together, you'd have Central Market. It may not excel in any one dimension, but it's still hard to resist. Assuming, of course, that you have the transportation to got to this "central" place 150 blocks north of Seattle's downtown core.

Depending on who you are, walking through Swanson's can either be really boring, or really expensive. A high-quality, they have a huge variety of plants, but, (un?)fortunately for me, I tend to kill most flora my fingers come in contact with. That doesn't keep me away from the rest of their selection, though - in particular, they are the only place in Seattle that regularly sells intact wine barrels (which are useful for rain catcher systems).

I'm an environmentalist. I really do respect the idea of reuse. It's just that, sometimes..... it really IS time to stop using that old crap and get something new. Those who go to RE-PC wouldn't agree with me. They would be ecstatic to pay 40% of the cost of a new computer that runs at 10% of the speed and sucks up twice as much power. "So cheap!" they would say, ignoring the fact that there are no refunds for broken hardware.
So, if, say, you're a ham radio operator that still thinks vacuum tubes are the shizznet, then RE-PC is for you. If you value your time and your power bill, look elsewhere.
