When I want a day of great shopping we head to the St. Louis Galleria Mall. It is a large mall with Macy's and Dillards as anchors. You can find most every other store you want from Banana Republic and Express to Brooks Brothers and Brighton. There really is something for everyone here. Restaurants include The Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza, Saint Louis Bread Company and Houlihans. There is also a small but nice food court. http://www.saintlouisgalleria.com

We recently spent 3 nights at the St. Louis Airport Marriott. We have stayed there in the past, but it has been many years and there have been changes made. We were given a room in the new tower (I would request this if I were you) which was very nice. Our room had all the new Marriott bedding and a plasma TV. We had the breakfast buffet daily and it was fresh and good...very typical for a Marriott buffet. The concierge lounge was nice and offered appetizers, drinks and dessert on weeknights as well as continental breakfast weekdays. The best thing was the price, compared to the downtown hotels, this one is a great deal.

On a recent trip to St. Louis we had a delicious meal at Fitz's in the loop. Fitz's is famous for the homemade which is brewed. Call ahead if you want to be sure to get there to watch the process, as they only do it certain times during the day. The root beer was available in a bottomless mug, and was wonderful. I had an Asian Chicken Salad with Candied Pecans
It had grilled chicken, mandarin oranges, red bell peppers, roasted candied pecans, mixed greens and spring mix tossed in Asian dressing. It was $8.99. My daughter had a great pizza, and my husband loved the burger. We loved the place and will definitely put it on our list for our next visit.

The Saint Louis Art Museum located in Forest Park in St. Louis has more than 100 galleries. The building was designed by architect Cass Gilbert as the Palace of Fine Arts for the 1904 World's Fair in Forest Park. Standing atop Art Hill, it is the "crown" jewel" of the 1,370-acre park. This museum seems to go one forever-room after room! Admission is FREE! This is not an art gallery...certainly there are many paintings and drawings to see...but, there are many artifacts dating back thousands of years. There truly is something for everyone here. I wouldn't recommend this for small, tired children. I would do this first-with the promise of the zoo to follow! We found this to be very interesting-the building alone is worth going into. http://www.slfp.com/ForestParkAM.htm

Meriwether's Restaurant is located on the top floor of the Missouri History Museum in St. Louis. The beautiful, bright restaurant overlooks the Forest Park golf course and makes for a delightful dining experience. I was there for lunch and enjoyed a delicious salad and sandwich combination that was very gourmet and affordable. The tablecloths and napkins are linen, the service is wonderful. The prices are surprisingly reasonable. I look forward to going back on my next visit to Forest Park.

The Missouri Historical Society operates the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park in the heart of St. Louis. Admission to the museum is FREE! This is a wonderful museum, especially for those that grew up living or visiting St. Louis. It is housed in a beautiful building, the exhibits are very interesting. Currently there is an ongoing exhibit from the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair which I found very interesting because some of the buildings are still standing in Forest Park. There is generally a traveling exhibit that does charge an extra fee (currently Ben Franklin) but you can have a great time without spending any money. http://www.mohistory.org/content/HomePage/homepage.aspx

Located in Forest Park in the heart of St. Louis is a wonderful zoo, and the best part is the FREE admission. The Saint Louis Zoo has educated, entertained and earned a place in the hearts of St. Louisans for generations. With the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904, there began a long and slow process to establish a zoological park. The St. Louis Zoological Society was formed in 1910. The City of St. Louis set aside 77 acres in Forest Park for a zoo and named a Zoological Board of Control in 1913. State legislation provided that "the zoo shall be forever free," which has kept the Zoo accessible to millions of visitors ever since. This is a large zoo, with beautiful fountains, sculptures and many animals. Make sure you wear your walking shoes! There are a few parts of the zoo that charge a minimal fee (the children's zoo, the train etc.), but you can have a great day here and never spend a penny. Food is available at various eateries within the zoo. http://www.stlzoo.org/

This mom and pop barbecue place is successfully expanding and still maintains the quality and standards it has always had. We started going here to eat several years ago when they were in their original location. They have since moved to a larger facility, but the food is just the same-and it is delicious. They offer a variety of barbecued meats (beef, pork, turkey, chicken). My personal favorite is the chopped beef brisket. The sauces come mild and spicy. There are a wide variety of sides to choose from. The potato salad is to die for-as well as slaw, ranch beans, french fries and a vegetable of the day. This is not a fancy place. It is a place that offers great food at reasonable prices and wonderful customer service. We often grab carry out to take home with us to Effingham. Champaign/Urbana has a lot of restaurants, but this is my families number one choice when we are in town.

This is a family favorite for us. We have been staying at this hotel for many years as it continues to grow and expand. I really consider this hotel a destination. You can spend quite a while just walking through all the indoor gardens, walkways and watching the fountains. Sometimes you will find entertainment playing music or dancing in one of the lobby areas. There are several really nice shops, great restaurants and a food court. The pool area is nice (outdoor) and they have opened a new spa that I haven't tried. The hotel is usually pretty crowded, often with bus loads of people coming to Nashville, but it is so large that you don't really notice. It is not at all unusual to see a country music star walking through the lobby. The large Opry Mills Mall is within walking distance. This is a fun place to visit.

When we are in Nashville, TN we love to visit the Gaylord Opryland Hotel. It has several restaurants and we have tried most of them, but we always seem to find ourselves at Rachel's Buffet Restaurant.
Rachel's is a great spot to enjoy any meal of the day. It is just off the Magnolia Lobby and serves food buffet style. The restaurant is large and spacious, it was completely remodeled not too long ago. The food is great, with a lot of variety. Most of the hotel restaurants are pricey-but, worth it. Rachel's has the best value for the price and works really well if you are traveling with kids. Check it out when you are in Nashville. Make sure you allow time to explore the hotel. It is amazing!
