If you are really into music, you will love the Experience Music Project. The museum contains plenty of music memorabilia, primarily from rock stars, but it also includes many interesting exhibits. Kids especially like the room with instruments such as drums, guitars and keyboards that you can try out. And, of course, if the wait times are not too long, you get a chance to go into the little studio with a few friends and jam to your heart's content.

Sur la Table is a fun place to wander around in, as long as you don't mind the tight, well-packed aisles. They manage to fit a ton of stuff into this little store, so much so that it may be hard to spot what you're looking for. Luckily, the staff is friendly and helpful and can almost always find whatever kitchen gadget you're looking for. This store carries some nice high end stuff, but of course you'll pay dearly for it.

Seattle's Museum of History and Industry is packed full of things that sound somewhat dull. The story of Seattle's great fire, JP Patches the clown and some of the rotating exhibits are hardly the type of thing that makes me scream "I want to go!". And yet, despite this dull image, the museum manages to be very interesting and a great way to spend a rainy Seattle afternoon. It's educational but they make it fun too!

We have been taking our daughters to the Nutcracker since they were tiny tots. At first we weren't sure whether they were old enough to appreciate it, but it proved to be a wonderful experience for the entire family. The movements of the dancers, the colors and lights and, of course, the music kept the kids captivated through the entire show. The hot chocolate and cookies before the show were a big hit too.

The real strength of the YWCA Child Care in the Washington Mutual Tower is the staff. Many have been at the center for a decade or more and have great skill and patience in handling infants and toddlers. The center only takes children up to about three years old. The biggest drawback to this center, despite its convenient location, is the small windowless space in which it resides. True, the infants and even the toddlers probably don't know the difference, but nevertheless it just seems like having some natural light is a good thing for kids.

If you have a special Italian dinner or picnic planned, DeLaurenti is a great place for supplies and inspiration. Shelves are loaded with authentic pasta, sauces and other tidbits. No Ragu or Golden Grain here, this is the real stuff. It gets even better at the deli counter, with prosciutto and cheeses of a quality that you won't find just anywhere in Seattle. The store feels tiny and crowded, but just hold your breath and go in - it's worth the claustrophobia.

Magnolia Hardware is not the place to buy thousands of dollars worth of supplies for that new home improvement project. It is, however, a great place to dash to when you're in the middle of that project and discover you've forgotten an important tool or component. Although the store is small, in a neighborhood storefront, their selection is surprisingly large. They are smart about keeping their inventory to exactly the types of things that people come running in for at the last minute so don't be surprised when you actually find exactly what you're looking for in this cozy little store.

Trudy's Flowers is at times a decent florist shop. If you are lucky enough to get a fresh bouquet you might be satisfied, although you will likely be shocked at the price. However, much of what is sold pre-arranged in the store looks tired and left over. For these bouquets, the premium prices are really out of line. One thing Trudy's is good for is interesting vases and other glass items. All in all, with all the choices in Seattle, I'd go somewhere else.

There are dozens of gyms around Seattle that offer fancier settings and more bells and whistles, but as a basic place to work out, Mieko's Fitness is great. They have plenty of machines, unless you want to work out during one of the really peak times of day. There are tv screens to keep you entertained while you sweat. Most importantly, the Magnolia location is so easy to get to from anywhere in Magnolia that you really will have no excuse for not making the two minute trip to get your exercise!
