Las Brisas, although it's located in a Southeast Denver suburban strip mall and features a less than appealing somewhat cheesy decor, is a good place for a delicious meal. Their take on Mexican food focuses on fresh, intense flavors with great salsas and interesting combinations. The menu is also heavy on the seafood and steers clear of traditional Mexican staples - like cheesy tacos or enchiladas. I'd recommend the fajitas or the azul or verde, enchiladas featuring salsas, blue corn tortillas and lightly shredded chicken. Focus on the food and the margaritas, and attempt to ignore the scenery, and you'll have a great meal.

Chez Jose features the huge burritos that Chipotle is famous for, but the quality and flavor are superb at Chez Jose. The burrito is made to order- with the tortilla heated, the meat grilled and the burrito assembled as you wait. The black bean and cheese quesadillas at Chez Jose are delicious, a perfect mixture of beans and cheese encased in a nice, crispy (but not burned) tortilla. Make sure to try the fresh and flavorful salsas.

This toy store is a gold mine for the inquisitive child. I remember spending hours here when I was little, looking at the art supplies, participating in their clothesline art contest and searching through the costumes for dolls and stuffed animals. This store features a variety of great toys and products that foster creative and educational play, ranging from costumes for make-believe, puppets, art and craft projects to more construction oriented toys, like legos, Lincoln Logs and more.

The Starz Film Center in the old Tivoli Brewery (now the Auraria campus student center) is a great place to see an independent or foreign film. The theater always features interesting films at a reasonable price. Some of my favorites seen here in recent years include "Pieces of April" and "Mad Hot Ballroom". The latter documentary was part of the Starz Film Nights, a series of film screenings accompanied by a critic from the Denver Post (Michael Booth or Lisa Kennedy) and usually the film's director or someone else connected to the film. It is a fun way to see a great film before its general release.

The DCPA boasts itself as the largest theater complex under one roof. It features a variety of small theaters, like the Garner Galeria, Space, etc. , and the Temple Buell Theater as well as Boetcher Concert Hall and the new Ellie Caulkins Opera House (opening September 2005). Ranging from touring Broadway shows to long-running local shows like "I love you, you're perfect, now change" to world premieres, like "The Laramie Project" a few years ago, the DCPA is the place to see theater in Colorado. It does a good job, the theaters are beautiful and you feel like you are participating in the experience that theater should be. While some shows are better than others, that is to be expected in the performing arts, but you will no doubt have a good time.

This museum features a lovely collection of sculptures throughout the Englewood, Denver and Greenwood Village area. It encourages enjoyment of the arts and the participation in the arts by children. Its art classes for kids led by local artists are a don't miss. Also, the museum encourages appreciation of the performing arts as well and incorporates song and dance into its classes. It's a great place for the kids to spend part of their summer break.

Bonnie Brae's claim to fame is "we make it here", and they do. Their homemade flavors of rich ice cream are a great comfort food. They avoid artificial dyes and flavors, focusing instead on interesting combinations and real fruit. There seems to always be a line out of the door. However, if you prefer less fat and air in your frozen dessert, I would recommend heading a little further north on University to Gelato d'Italia for flavor-intense gelato. But, if traditional ice cream is your favorite, it's hard to beat Bonnie Brae.

The Washington Park Grille is a convenient neighborhood restaurant with a friendly atmosphere, delicious food and good drinks. It's a good place to meet up with friends after work or go for dinner when you don't feel like cooking. The happy hour deals of half price appetizers and cheaper drinks ($2 microbrew beers and glasses of their decent house wine). Try the Washington Park sampler with bruschetta, crab cake, calamari, tomatoes and mozerella cheese or the spinach, brie and artichoke dip. Enjoy the food, sip on wine and catch up with friends and family in this nice neighborhood spot.

Hapa is a good place to go for happy hour - with cheap sushi, edamame, rolls and drinks. It has some of the most unusual rolls, with equally intriguing names - like the caterpillar and the double orgasm. You'll be encountered with rolls featuring shrimp tempura, avocado and smoked salmon with teriyaki sauce, or other complex combinations. However, if traditional, well prepared sushi and really fresh fish is more to your liking, I'd suggest heading over to Sushi Den for a better sushi and sashimi experience.

Even with the departure of acclaimed chef Jennifer Jasinski, Panzano is serving up good Italian food. Its bread is delicious, its pasta combinations flavorful and unique and the setting is elegant, quite the change from the preconceptions one might have about a hotel restaurant. Panzano is a wonderful place for a late lunch of delicious salads and warm bread or a holiday dinner with the family. It may be even better as a Sunday breakfast spot, however. While other restaurants are stuck in the mode of serving later brunch, and often buffet style, Panzano opens early and serves strong coffee, unique egg dishes and a stellar french toast. Just be sure to arrive early, before the good breads are gobbled up.
