Being new to New York I was totally affraid to get my hair cut in a city where the sky's the limit when it comes to beauty. There are so many hair salons in New York that I didn't know where to begin or who to trust. A friend of mine recommended Hello Beautiful on Bedford Ave in Brooklyn. I've been there 4 times now and haven't regreted it. Hair cuts are on average cheaper than most places you'll find and they're stylists have the training and talent to work at bigger salons. I usually get a hair cut, and a two-color process and it runs me about $110. A little steep for a CT girl but not bad for NYC. Hello Beautiful takes men and women's appointment and are super flexible.

After moving to the "upper" upper west side I was a bit worried that I would have to rent movies from the dreaded Blockbuster Video. Low and behold, Kim's Mediopolis appeared on Broadway in the Columbia neighborhood. Sister of the infamous Kim's Video locations downtown, this place stocks it all. You can rent or buy almost any sort of film out there. And if your a film buff who follows film by watching certain directors, Kim's downstairs archive section has a section listed by director. For me it's a great way to remember what I haven't seen and what's on the list. Kim's also has a great selection of music and books for sale. They have great sale sections too. A great find for film buffs and modest film goers alike.

Saigon Grill does offer meat and seafood dishes but it's the veggie plates that get me moving. They offer huge plates of rice and vegetables for under $10. The spring rolls could possibly be the best I've ever had. And there is this crazy calamari salad that I would never had ordered if it wasn't for a friend and it's like nothing I've ever had before. This Saigon Grill on the west side was just a small whole in the wall two years ago. Now it's absolutely huge which means no more standing in line and no more eating by the kitchen. Fast, polite service tops it off.

Brandfon Honda gets it right when most car dealerships fall flat on their face. I bought at 2003 Honda Civic here and I wish I still lived in New Haven so that I could still go to this dealership. When buying my car I had a female employee who took me around and showed me what Honda had to offer. She was never pushy except for the 2-3 phone calls she made to me after my visits. Negotiating the price was easy and almost completely hassle free. And the maintenance staff was curtious and helpful. They even wash your car after ever oil change. Except for a Honda dealership in Troy, NY I've never found a nicer place to bring my car.

Here's a great restaurant in New Haven that has great food that is cheap, fast, hot and tummy filling. I was a bit skeptical of this place as it took over the space that once was the best coffee shop in NH, the Daily Grind. But once I was coaxed inside I found a delicious noodle shop with tons of veggie, meat and seafood options to satisfy the biggest of appetites. Definitely try the noodle soup and not the usual Chinese fare. The Curry Shrimp Noodle with wide noodles is my usual choice. The shrimp are fresh and super big and the noodles are big enough to cut with a spoon as to not slurp the noodle all over yourself.

The State Cinema is a great place to see films when you're not looking to drop $20 on seeing a movie. Not only is regular admission only $5 but on Tuesday it drops to $3. The State Cinema looks to be family owned and operated. The popcorn and drinks are cheap and the seats are comfy. The big theatre is enormous and the smaller theatre is stadium seating with these huge reclining chairs. Movie prices have gone sky high so the State Cinema is a needed retreat. Bring a sweater to the movies though. It's pretty cold in there.

Four or five years ago my friend Lucy took me to this place. It's a huge restaurant mixed within all these tiny SOHO shops. The restaurant itself is welcoming and is filled with all sorts of well loved plants. Although you can't go wrong with anything on the regular menu, it's the specials menu where you'll really find the culinary gems. This past Sunday I took my boyfriend and his mother to Spring Street and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I had a seafood/pasta plate with homemade yummy yellow pasta with all sorts of clams and muscles. My boyfriend had a very filling salmon/avocado salad and his mother had a swordfish/polenta plate. All of the food was hot, yummy, appealing and good for you! They also have this to-die-for rosemary bread. My favorite restaurant in a town of many!

If you're ever in New Haven, CT or perhaps you're lucky enough to live there, you must find The Pantry. I never thought a breakfast/brunch nook could ever be my favorite restaurant but it is. Owned by two brothers, this hole in the wall on the corner of State and Mechanic Streets in New Haven is home away from home. Menu highlights are Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine, any sort of omelet, homemade fruit pancakes and enormous waffles. The hash browns/potato side are hot, crunchy and never to be skipped. Combine this with some old school jazz and it's nearly perfect. The only issue is the long line you'll wait in on the weekends. Rain, snow and sleet doesn't keep the fans away.

In my 2 short years living on the Upper West Side I've found the Fairway Market on the west side of Harlem to be the best place to shop for fresh ingredients at the best prices. Fresh Basil is never more than $2 and you'll get a big package of it. The cheese and olive section is the best I've ever seen. For the refrigerated section, if you forget to bring a jacket, don't worry they'll let you borrow one. Try to avoid going on a Sunday. As all markets are, it's super crowded!
