This place is perfect for a chilled conversation with a few good friends, or some lover enchanted staring with wine. They have beer & wine, some food, but mostly it's a good desert place. The prices are great but the service is pretty sketchy. Be prepared to wait, and just have an overall open mind about you experience and you'll be fine! Pull up a couch or sit outside and enjoy a hookah (tobacco, of course).

walking into the Horse Brass is walking into another country - the U.K. Whether you're there on a crowded weekend night for a few pints, or the middle of the day for Fish and Chips, you'll always feel the welcoming spirit of the place. A great place away from the trend frenzy in other parts of town, this is a refreshing break in the fakery. Grab some darts or watch a football match and take a peek at the decorated walls on your way around, this pub has seen it's share of Portland's Anglophiles.

Made in Oregon is pretty obviously all things Oregon, and has made a great business of it for years. I have bought everything from hazelnuts to hand painted mugs to salmon to beer to CDs of local artist here. They have a great selection of Oregon wines, and some good art/craft pieces. I like this location because it's easy to bring my family Oregon stuff without having to double-check it's authenticity. Having moved here from Chicago, they have certain ideas of what Oregon is and I love to bring them something that makes then curious about this great state.

Having been at this location forever, this store has a good base of loyal customers. They could go across the river to Ritz or whatever, but they don't. And for good reason - the processing I've had done here (larger formats) has turned out well, and the staff have a good knowledge of films and developing technique to get what you want. Slowly moving to digital, and still have a good used selection for film cameras - especially older one.

If you live too far away from a Rich's cigar shop, this is a good alternative. They have fresh loose tobacco by weight that is tasty and comes in various styles and strengths. I have liked their Amsterdam blend. The staff know what they're doing and they have a large assortment of pipes, etc. This is a good one stop shop for all thing tobacco. I think you can get tie-dyes, too. Good place to go for gifts, also.

At the homely corner of 82nd and Tillamook sits Portland Closeout. This Asian run store, with rows of kids bikes out front, has eveything from toilet paper to pots for plants to the 1995 cassette tape of singers in other languages. I have wandered through the tight isles with wonder at how much stuff was crammed into this medium-sized building. It was fun to explore the various levels of quality and large range of product the was stacked before me. Great place for that off0beat gift or wanderlust adventure purchase that you'll have to rationalize at home.

I have always loved art glass and this is a great place to get it. Many fine artisan pieces from tiny to huge. Great selection of jewelry, all hand crafted and gorgeous. To browse here is to engage with very nice, knowledgable salespeople, and come away with a new perspective on craft works. Many wood peices and some metal work round out the array. Prepare to spend money, but also be ready to be awed by the works.

They have a good selection of nicer papers (Crane's, etc.) and pens. Lots of cool cards and a very convenient location downtown. Also located out at the airport, which can be convenient, too. The friendly staff know their product and have a good handle on recommendations as far as cards go. I really like all the little journals and note cards and such. Can also get your filofax refills here. One of the better paper places in portland, although it's more for writing than for printing.

Step inside and you've entered a happier, gentler, more caring place. They have all sorts of gifts here that come from all over the world. Lots of great items under $20. The staff are educated in the how and where of the product, and everything is made without the use of slave or near-slave labor in developing nations. The most guilt-reducing consumer experince in Portland...makes it a good place to stop after glutting your house with extra junk from Target.

First is a top-rate funiture installer that work on all major manufacturers product lines (Knoll, Herman Miller, Steelcase) and does office moving and warehousing as well. I have found them to work well with deadlines and they have been very accomodating to our varied requests for labor only jobs. The company is family owned and run, and there is no BS. They are straightforward and competatively priced.
