Broadway Grill serves decent food, but it is a bit on the expensive side. The non-smoking area is a sunken dining room with poor acoustics; it gets very noisy. The smoking section borders the windows at street level, so you can watch the characters passing on Broadway. There is also a long counter with about 10 stools; this is nice for single diners and for people who like to watch their food being cooked. Most of their dishes are okay, but not spectacular. The pancakes are not very fluffy, and they are ridiculously overpriced. The hollandaise sauce on the Eggs Benedict is unlike any I've ever tasted; it is very unpleasant. On weekends they have a breakfast buffet which is a good value. There is a big neon sign in the window that proclaims "Serving Food til 3 AM", but my buddy and I stumbled in there one morning at 2:15 and were told that the kitchen was closed.

I have been to Julia's many times, and it is usually a pleasant experience. Most of their dinners are very tasty; I recommend you order the special (it's usually something delicious from the chef) or the Chicken Forestiere. Breakfasts are okay, but their dinners are much better. The dining room features a lot of dark wood and they have some beautiful chandeliers that light the restaurant. There is also a bar that you can sit at. Their specialty drinks a bit pricey, and they're not big enough to make them a good value. Dinner prices are reasonable. The entire establishment is no smoking. Two sides of the dining room have full windows, with one side looking out to Broadway. In the summer they have outdoor seating on both Broadway and E Thomas St. They have live music on the weekends, usually jazz or blues, with no cover charge. There is also a Baby Grand piano that is played on certain weeknights, sometimes with live singers. I've had many pleasant dinners here and would definitely recommend Julia's. However, there have been some visits that were problematic in terms of slow service. Once we visited during Happy Hour and were not given the Happy Hour menu. We ordered burgers and were charged full price (even though the sign on the window read "Happy Hour - $3 Burgers"). The waitress stated that the $3 price is only for burgers ordered off the Happy Hour menu. The waitress should have offered us the Happy Hour menu when she seated us. If you like live jazz or blues, then Julia's is a nice place just to hang out in the lounge area and enjoy some drinks.

The Olympia Pizza and Spaghetti House III is on the north end of Capitol Hill. The restaurant is situated in a long narrow building that extends back from the street, so there are very few window tables. The type of pizza served here is deep dish, and it is very good. A thick flaky crust and traditional sauce are the basis for every pizza. They also have the obligatory Italian dishes (Lasagna, etc.) and serve beer and wine. The food here is reasonably priced, and is just as good as Bill's Off Broadway. The difference is that Bill's is more of a hangout joint and has a bar, while Olympia Pizza is a much quieter restaurant.

Bill's is one of the better Italian restaurants on Capitol Hill, although it feels more like a bar than a restaurant. They serve an array of beers and the house wines are just $3 a glass. Their deep dish pizzas have a thick delicious crust and the sauce is perfectly seasoned. In addition to pizza they also serve the Italian standards (like spaghetti and meatballs). During the summer they have sidewalk seating so that you can enjoy the outdoors. Prices are reasonable and the food is very good quality. With dark walls and moderate lighting, the atmosphere is very relaxing (although on Friday and Saturday nights it can get a bit noisy). This is one of Capitol Hill's best hangouts.

The first time I tried Tony Roma's, the ribs were very dry and disappointing. A few years later I decided to give the place a second chance and had a good experience. Since then I've been to Tony Roma's dozens of times and have consistently been served moist and delicious ribs. I recommend the Carolina Honeys; they're the tastiest ribs on the menu. I've had steak here several times and it has always been very tender and flavorful. They once had the best coleslaw in Seattle, but they changed their coleslaw recipe and now it is just average. If you don't want to drive up north for ribs, or you want genuine smoked ribs (not just smoky-flavored), try Longhorn Barbeque's Outpost in Pioneer Square.

One of the few places that is open 24 hours, Cafe Minnie's is a diner with good quality food. The shabby dining room sure could use a remodel, but perhaps that is part of the charm. The staff generally wears black and is adorned with piercings and tattoos, but is non-threatening. I've only had their breakfasts and have never been disappointed. Their home fries are seasoned with rosemary, which I think is a little too strong for breakfast time. Overall, the food here is certainly a notch above Denny's. Cafe Minnie's is located very close to downtown, so be prepared to hunt for parking.

On the top floor of Pacific Place mall, this brewery is conveniently located next to the AMC theaters. Gordon Biersch brews their own beer. In the winter months I highly recommend the Dunkles; it is dark but smooth, and not too heavy. My buddy and I have visited Gordon Biersch several times and we always have a good experience. The food is sufficient, some dishes excellent. The NY Strip is very good, though a tad pricey, and the burgers are great. The garlic fries are delicious, and they're not overly garlicky. In October they have an Oktoberfest menu featuring German food (if you order the jaegerschnitzel be sure to specify that you want spaetzle with it). They also have a delicious Oktoberfest brew.

This comfortable pub is in a building just a few years old, but it has all the charm of an old alehouse. The high ceilings and the dark wood decor make for a very nice atmosphere. There's even a bartender who speaks with a genuine Irish accent. They have a nice selection of beers on tap; I highly recommend the Smithwicks (dark and smooth, not too bitter). The menu features typical Irish pub fare; good reliable comfort food, well prepared and reasonably priced. The Shepherd's Pie is very good, but the Golden Buck is definitely an acquired taste.

This is your typical pretentious restaurant with white tablecloths, except without the quality food. On my single visit to the Metropolitan Grill I ordered the Steak Oscar. When I cut into it steak juice flooded my plate. Any novice with basic cooking skills can tell you that when you remove a steak from the grill it must sit for a few minutes so that the fibers can re-absorb the juices. Apparently, their chef was unaware of this. The result was juice all over my plate, instead of in the steak.
Have you ever seen that PBS documentary in which some wine "experts" were fooled by the filmmaker? The director surreptitiously replaced a $200+ bottle of wine with a $4 bottle of table wine. The following day, when the wines were being judged, the experts had no clue that a bottle of cheap wine had been slipped in among the expensive wines, and they rated it to be in the same class as those other wines. Well, as I was sitting in the Metropolitan Grill I was reminded of that documentary. Somehow, I doubt that the chef here is any more skilled than those at a franchise steakhouse. If you want a genuinely good steak try JAKs in West Seattle.

This restaurant may very well sell the worst burgers I've ever had. They were served on sub rolls instead of buns, but that wasn't mentioned on the menu. The chef/cook failed to apply a light coat of mayonnaise to the bread, resulting in the bottom half of the roll being soggy. The fries that came with the burger were cold. The acoustics in the restaurant were horrible; we had to ask our server to repeat herself several times, and she had to lean over to hear us. My dinner partner and I were unable to carry on a conversation because of the noise. Other parties raised their voices in order to talk, which resulted in us being surrounded by people who were practically yelling - not my idea of a relaxing dinner! Additionally, our server got my order wrong, and then insinuated that it was my fault. The Cheesecake Factory is quite possibly the noisiest restaurant I've ever been in. We never did try the cheesecake... and we haven't returned.
