Seattle Stained Glass is a shop and production house that makes great pieces of work. Whether you are looking for something for a new building or a small commissioned piece of work, they are a great place to start. I can't guarantee their pricing is competitive, mainly because I don't source stained glass regularly. However, several friends referred me originally and I thought my dealings with them were excellent.

I have two Hondas and have used Burien Japanese Auto Service several times. While I sometimes am a fan of doing service work at dealerships (for genuine parts, etc.), this is a great place for tune-ups and oil changes. In fact, they do a cheaper oil change for my CRV, and they know they have to blow the excess oil out of the oil pan, or it will drip on my driveway. That's the very nice thing about their specialty in Japanese cars. Their pricing is average but sometimes cheaper than the dealer for things like belts, spark plugs, and air filters.

West Seattle Karate is a great place for young kids to learn karate. They offer a full program that is extremely friendly for kids, but lets parents participate and/or watch the lessons. Their prices are reasonable, the progress rate is slow but moves forward, and the instructors are extremely compassionate. I like their focus on non-violence and karate as a form of exercise and body use, not just fighting.

Lollipop's is a relatively new shop in the great little downtown area of Burien. They have a wide variety of childrens clothing - and much of it is adorable and affordable. Since their hours are about 9 to 5, it is worth taking a quick trip over your lunch hour or on Saturday to check out their selection and deals.

If you're still buying CDs in person, I urge you to check out Easy Street Records. They have a great selection - just like any record store giant - but they are a local shop. It's a great place to find used CDs (or tapes), and they even have a decent supply of vinyl in the store. I go there and browse the used CDs about once a week and have found gems for less than $5 per CD.

Queen Anne Office Supply store is a great local business to support. While you might think that bigger stores have better prices, I've found that for specialty items, Queen Ann Office Supply has great deals. They also sell bulk items (i.e. a box of 12 pens) for the same price - or less - than the office supply giants. Service is good, parking is reasonable, and I am very glad they are in the marketplace.

Mother Nature's Natural Health Store is a great place for specific health items that you still cannot get in a market like PCC or Whole Foods. For example, certain supplements or herbal remedies are available in various forms at Mother Nature's, while they are not in the other health stores. Their prices are great, and the staff seem to have been around for a long time, which makes them very helpful. It's also less busy so you get overall better service.

I have a Cannondale mountain bike that has had problems with the gears since nearly the day I bought it. Finally, I was riding around Greenlake and decided to stop in at Gregg's to see if they could help. The service desk was fast, the tech really knew his stuff, and they fixed it on the spot with what felt like a very small charge.
It's a great spot to be located, too, because once your bike is fixed, you can take a spin around Greenlake!

I took my cat into Greenlake Animal Hospital for a small emergency, and I found them to be very helpful, compassionate, and reasonable. Their after-hours service is pretty exceptional; they stay open fairly late and have found some way to accommodate last-minute appointments with relative ease. I had a good experience both with the techs and the vets, and my cat did well, too!

Camp Indralaya is an camp run in part by the Theosophical Society. If you're interested in metaphysical topics, in meditation, or in spirituality, I recommend looking into Indralaya's programs (www.indralaya.org). There are programs all summer long, from yoga retreats, to creativity seminars, to spirituality retreats. It is a very special place to spend time even in the rainy weather.
