There is an unexpected surprise waiting in the Moonlight cafe: a full second menu that mirrors the regular menu except all of the dishes (Vietnamese, mostly and some chinese) are made with tofu and fake meat counterparts. As a vegetarian, it's fun to be able to order general tso's chick'n, and other standard fare that is usually reserved for meat.
The downside of the place is that it is also a lounge, and smoking seems to be allowed inside. Also, there is a stage and a giant screen set up for kareoke, which could be fun if you're expecting it, or distractingly loud (can't talk to your tablemates) if you're not.
In the future, I think I will carry-out my food.

Home of the earn a bike program: a program that teaches neighborhood kids how to fix bicycles, and then coaches them as they put in hours fixing bikes in exchange for a bike of their own. That alone is a cool enough feature to make me want to take my business there.
My experience has been limited to tune-ups and the occational small fix with these guys, and I have nothing but good things to say. They were extremly friendly, did a really good job, and were quite reasonably priced.
Awesome.

Arayas, which recently moved from its long time location on the Ave in the University district to a nearby location on 45th, is fantastic, sure to please both the vegan/vegetarian (who will be extatic at the amount of amazing choices avaialble) and their meat-loving friends (who may just forget about their desire for meat while they slurp down this awesome food that doesn't seem to lack anything) with their huge variety of delicious, fresh, spicy, saucy, noodle-y vegan dishes.
A perk of Arayas is that they do a great lunch buffet, for about $6-7, i think, during which you are allowed to graze amidst plates and plates of wonderful entrees and try all of the items. they also have really delicious tom yum soup.
this just might be my favorite restaurant in seattle, and I highly recommend it to anybody, vegetarian or otherwise!

This little gem is in an unlikely location- right on the main throughfare in Poulsbo, about 10 minutes off of the Seattle-Poulsbo ferry.
They call themselves a vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant, but their menu extends beyond Vietnam and into China. They have a delicious Ma Po tofu that consists of tiny diced carrots and peas and little cubes of tofu in a spicy brown gravy. Their vegetables and fake-chicken in yellow curry is also really delicious.
If you're in the mood for a lighter fare, they have a range of cold rice noodle salads and spring rolls that are really good and refreshing.
The water that they serve comes with a twist of fresh lime juice, and they offer brown rice.
This place is fantastic, and each time i go in there I get the feeling like I want to tell everybdoy I know to go and fill the often sparcely populated restaurant with some soon to be sasified vegetarian hunger!!!

Aside from having a huge selection of indie/hard to find/unusual movies (in addition to all of the usual blockbuster fare), this place rocks because of its staff.
They can, at times, be a little bit intimidateing with their wealth of knowledge and the coolness that comes with being an expert in a trendy field, but they are amazing resources who really know their stuff. You can talk to these guys and girls about anything movie related, and chances are good they'll have something interesting to say. They are certainly not your typical bored teenagers working halfbrained at the local video store, no, these rare creatures are gods and goddesses of cinematic knowledge.
and chances are, they sure as heck will have that obscure film you're looking for.

This is a cool little neighborhood theater in a cool old re-vamped building in the heart of Columbia City. It definatlly has the feeling of a labour of love, and whoever took the time to make it into a working theater is awesome.
The unusual thing about this theater is that it shows mainstream movies, one at a time, in a venue that one might expect to be showing indie/arthouse flics. I'm hopeing that this fact draws a sufficient amount of business to the theater, because it seems like the sort of place that really needs some regulars and a little publicity to make it work.
I strongly suggest giving it a try!

BCCNW is good for all of your misc computing needs, from setting up computers and networks, to virus protection and removal to just makeing the darn printer work!
They are extremly friendly and a pleasure to work with, and I would trust them with the most sensitive of our computing needs.
They also offer a free consultation, and they do "housecalls" to your business.

Matthiesen's Flowers has been a fixture of Columbia City for years- bringing freshness and beauty to a neighborhood that wasn't always such a great place to hang out.
It has perservered quite nicely, and always has beautiful flowers and makes beautiful boutineers and crosages. In addition, they now sell candy, which is the perfect sweet complement to a gift of flowers.
The folks who run the store are wonderful too... friendly and helpful and always ready to help you create the perfect arrangement.

The new bookstore in Columbia city is really a nice place, the sort of establishemnt that I try to remind myself to visit more often because I really want it to stay in business and really enjoy it every time i go in.
The bookstore is decently sized, and has an impressive variety of books, includeing a large new and used childrens section (i believe those are the only new books in the place), text books, and foreign language novels.
The staff is really friendly and helpfull, and there is a chessboard sitting in a comfy spot by the large front windows just waiting for somebody to sit down for a while and play.
This place is definatly worth a look.

Earthwise is a great place to go if you are remodeling or doing a home-repair project and you have a general idea of what you might need but don't have a very specific desire. The place is full of nice, used building supplies/fixtures/decorations rangeing from very antique to very new, includeing all kinds of very cool kitchy-type items that could be fantastically retro looking if put in the right place.
It is certainly worth a gander if you're just generall looking for bits and pieces for your house, and also worht a try (but don't hold your breath) if you're looking for a speciic piece.
the store is well organized and the staff is generally helpfull.
and you can rest your environmental concience a little bit by re-useing something!
