Vertical world is a great gym for people who want to train for climbing roped routes out side. Sport climbing or trad climbing, the routes follow steepness angles and features that are commonly found outside. A large part, nearly half, of the gym is equipped with lead bolts and the majority of these routes are lead-only. The gym floor substrait is carpet over concrete, which can be disconcerting at times... like before you clip that first bolt. The crowd tents to be older, 30+ people who are there to train for their weekend climbs and not socialize as much as other gyms.

Stone Gardens is a climbing gym that more or less specializes in bouldering. There are plenty of top rope walls, and a few good lead climbing walls, but the majority of the action in route setting happens in their vast bouldering caves. The clientelle is usually the younger 20 something crowd, which makes for a fun and relaxed atmosphere. You can use loose chalk here, but a drawback to that is the air becomes quite heavy with calk in the afterwork hours. Overall very nice though.

Feathered Friends is a medium sized gear shop attached to a 34 year old down clothing and sleeping bag company. They have a much wider selection of gear than, say REI, in both technical climbing equipment as well as general backpacking and backcountry skiing gear. The sales people are generally very knowledgeable and nice. If you need to buy a big item, or just some gas for a camping trip, this is a great place to go.

This place is fantastic.
I recently had out-of town company and we went down to NWOC to rent kayaks in Lake Union for the afternoon. They were able to outfit us in all of the gear (without having a reservation), and were really patient in helping those who had never kayaked before. We had a great afternoon kayaking around, includeing paddleing over to Ivars and docking at their docks and having some fish and chips. (one of us stayed and watched the kayaks, of course.)
When we returned the boats, we learned about a guided "sunset tour" that they put on, where you paddle through lake union and through the ballard locks and emerge in puget sound right in time to watch the sunset. They then pack up your boats for you, and give you some kind of shuttle back to your car. We didn't have time to do this, but I thought that it sounded like a really cool idea.
We had a great afternoon, and these guys (and girls!) were so nice and helpfull to us. I highly recommend them!

The crest seems to be Seattle's last true discount theater (that has managed to resist the admission hike that the Admiral in west Seattle has succumbed to).
It has the feeling of a discount theater... sort of old fashoned and funky in a good way. The movies that are played are a combination of Blockbusters (screeed a while after their first run), and more off-beat indie type movies.
The actual theater is really pleasant and intimate... it is a small room with steep rows of chairs riseing to the back, and going there feels like taking part in some sort of almost personal event.
I'd go to this theater all the time if it wasn't located so far north of the city.

Davis Freeman uses an old fashoned polaroid camera to take beautiful photos with a very unique feel to them.
He works well with people of all ages, includeing small children, and operates out of a studio in his Queen Ann home.
He is friendly and open and makes one feel comforatable while poseing (which can be a difficult task).
It is difficult to describe the effect that his photography has, so I suggest looking at his website to check it out.
The downside is that he is rather pricy.

Alki would be it. Alki is one of only a few sandy Puget Sound beaches in Seattle, which makes it hospitable to sunbathing, vollyball, and generally lots of fun-seeking folks.
Sand: the sand seems safe to walk around barefoot in... not much broken glass or anything like that. However, the sand is quite dirty from people making (illigal) fires on the beach and leaveing their charred wood to dispurse into the sand. So expect dirty feet.
Water: Puget sound is cold! But if you're thick skinned, this is a great swimming beach with a gradual slope and a sandy/pebbly substrate into the water. There is occationally big clumps of seaweed that wash up, but nothing too alarming.
Bike/Rollarblade/walking path: there is a nice scenic paved path right along the beach that is busy with people strolling, exerciseing, rideing rented adult-tricycles, etc.
The scene: lots of all types of people! hardbodies playing vollyball, familys having picnics, kids running and splashing around, teenagers hanging out with friends, old folks exerciseing on the path.
Beachfires: are allowed in the designated fire pits, but not out on the beach.
Services: there are public bathrooms, and a ton of restaurants/coffee shops/ice cream shops, rollarblade rentals, etc just accross the street
Parking: can be tough. there is street parking all along the beach, but it fills up quickly and you may be forced into the surrounding neighborhoods on a busy (sunny) day.

I've had good luck going into Recycled cycles and getting minor bike repairs made, and I would certainly trust them with more serious work too.
The shop consists of one room of new seeming, gear (includeing some rather high end goods), and another with a bunch of used bikes/bike pieces in it. Together they form a nice and complete selection of new and used bikes and bike accesories.
My experience with the staff has been generall good... there isn't really that snobbishness that sometimes comes with speciality sporting goods stores. However, there are times when I go in and am bombarded with help to the point where I feel like I just need a little space.
Overalll, its a great shop.

Seven is a very nice salon, if you are ok with spending a little more than average for your stylings. It is a small spot on 7th avenue, across the street from the movie theater. It is a personal, stylish (both by hair and attitude) feeling space with about twelve chairs lining the walls. The hair dressers are not allowed to wear anything but black unless it's summer time, when they can throw white in their mix.
I have had my hair done there several times, and was satisfied with each experience. I have had both cuts and color done, and with each they offer personal advice - if you ask for it. They do not inject their ideas if they are not wanted. Nor are they pushy about selling their products (although the times I have given in it has been well worth it), and even if their services are more pricey than other local salons, I like the place.

McClendons is an old fashoned hardware store for a modern time. They've managed to stay up to date with their products and technology while maintaining the old fashoned goodness of employees who actually know what they're talking about. They really understand what is needed to keep a house running and make sure that every size and style of every important piece are in stock.
They are a locally owned hardware store that was started in Renton, and now have a couple of stores in the Seattle area.
They have better selection than either Home Depot or Lowes, and also way better help.
Highly recommended
