I've had several experiences with these mechanics. They are quick, and generally pretty friendly, and will get you in very fast if you have a problem. Not too much waiting around. However, the quality of their work can leave some to be desired. When having a new exaust system put in they forgot to weld on one of the hoses. The muffler still rattles. Their prices are okay, and they can do new tires quickly. However I'm not going back.

Glazers Camera Supply is a small shop with a lot of high quality gear. Their cold storage film selection is amazing, having virtually every brand, speed and format out there. Their shop staff is generally knowledgeable and will help you in selecting the proper thing for your needs. This is also the odd ball place to find slide projector equipment as well as darkroom materials. Overall a great resource to have close by.

Second Ascent is a great multi purpose outdoor shop. Specializing in new, used and demo/sample gear, there is something for everybody. Besides the usual climbing hardware you will find an ample supply of boots, new and used, that will fit your style and budget. In the winter their ski shop has great selection and a knowledgeable shop who can mount your gear. In the summer, skis make way for a fabulous bike shop. Road and mountain bikers alike can find great service here. Their guidebook and instructional book section is quite vast as well. Overall, excellent prices and great gear.

Prolab is the place to go when you need it done right. Their photo lab staff are among the best in town and will bend over backward to make sure that your prints or products are going to look exactly how you want them too. Their website can be a bit intimidating, what with all the options and requirements, but that is what it takes to get such precision and quality prints. They also do flim and slide film proccessing quite well. Prolab is expensive compared to other places, but you're buying the best.

Urban surf is a multi-water sport shop where you can rent surfboards and wetsuits as well as purchase kite boarding and skating gear. The staff seems fairly knowledgeable, perhaps not the best, but they seem to be out there every weekend doing it. Their selection of locally made surf boards is good and you can be assured of finding just the right shape, size and length here. Rentals and gear may be a little pricier here than elsewhere, but that's just my observation.

The Outdoor Research company store is a great place to get the newest and best from OR, as well as pick up some great deals on their clearance items. A small room in the back is dedicated to these great deals. Also, no where else can you try on the whole array of the company's line. Overall the sales people are very nice and non-pressuring.

I love going to MacPhersons. It is mostly an open air fruit and vegetable market with very low prices that seem to be dependent upon what the farmers/suppliers seem to be produceing most. (One week, watermellon might be super cheap, the next week, it's the cabbage that's a great deal).
Of course with the low prices comes some sub-obtimal produce: over ripe fruit, bruises, etc. But part of the fun of shopping here is picking through all of the produce looking for what it is that pleases you.
They also have a rather impressive selection of peppers and other mexican themed ingredients.
a downside is that it can be quite busy on the weekend, and kind of chaotic in the small parking lot.

Pro Mountain Sports is a specialty backpacking and mountaineering shop that sells carefully selected gear. The focus is on light weight gear that perfectly suits the needs you have. The shop staff are fantastic and very knowledgeable. If you are unsure of what is best, just go in and chat for a while. For the serious climber, this is the place to come to lighten your load. The shop is located near the UW and is open on Saturdays, which makes it all too convienient.

This place has been my source for contacts and glasses for the past 10 years at least. Dr. Gromely is a very nice and smart optomitrist who is really up on the current technologies. They are open through the week and on saturdays and don't usually have a problem getting you an appointment within a week. Their contacts and glasses, like all specialty shops are more costly than Costco, but insurance usually covers that.

Checka Looka is everything you want a local surf shop to be. The guy who runs the place is super nice, overflowing with enthusiasm about surfing. This is a good place to rent boards and wetsuits for your first time surfing as their rates are some of the best in town, and much cheaper than out on the coast. The shop has a decent array of boards for sale, as well as some used short boards. They sell wetsuits and rash guards, along with the usual apparel. Overall a great shop with none of the usual attitude.
