The Hothouse is a wonderful gem of a place tucked down below street level on Capital Hill.
When you enter (there is a locked door and you must be let in) you take off your shoes and then proceed into a dressing room where the floors are heated and there is filtered water with fresh limes. Upon undressing, your choices of activity are a (lavendar scented, when I've been there) steam room, a cedar sauna, a large hot tub, a cold plunge shower and a quiet space for resting after your soak.
The tone is tranquil and they discourage much talking and instead play quiet music. The lighting is dim and calm.
I really love this place because it has many of the amenities of a "spa" but with out all of the froufrou service and spendy pricetag. (I believe the cost is $12... quite a good deal). If you would like to indulge in more than the basic stuff, there is a masseuse available for massages for an additional cost.

I enjoyed a really tasty variation on the typical vegetarian tofu vietnamese sandwich at the baguette box. Like most tofu vietnamese sandwiches, it consisted of chunks of fried tofu, carrots, pickeled (?) radish, cilantro, onions, etc, but the high quality bread and the exceptionally delicious tofu made this sandwich stick out.
I also had the beet salad, and it was super good... thin tender slices of beets swimming in garlicy olive oil.
Downsides: a little bit expensive, and parking can indeed be difficult if you plan on arriving via car

Pho Cycle has an incredibly satisfying vegetarian dish: the Spicy Lemongrass tofu with noodles. It comes in typical Vietnamese noodle bowl fashon with a big bunch of basil and herbs, a nest of tender rice noodles, chopped peanuts, cucumber, shaved radish, carrot etc with some really tasty slightly smoky spicy strips of lemongrass tofu and a cup of soy (vegan) based broth to pour over the whole thing.
The staff is always really friendly too.

If I ate meat I'd likely go for the charred pork version of this dish, which looks similar but replace the tofu with large flat strips of really good looking charred pork and includes some fish sauce in the broth.
The staff is always really friendly too.

Holy Cow, I just had the vegetarian Pho at pho cyclo and I don't know what took me so long!! Only the Broadway location has the vegetarian version (the 1st ave one has a bowl with tofu, but it has chicken broth instead of vegi broth). In addition to the regular pho stuff, this one comes with chunks of cauliflower and carrot, roasted garlic, and a little bowl of the MOST AMAZING spicy red ginger sauce that you can dump in. I am a big fan of Than Brothers, but I might have a new favorite. This bowl, with the ample vegis and tofu that somehow feels less fried than Than Bro's, actually feels more like a balanced meal. Delicious!!!

I was recently in a fender-bender and went in to H & I for an estimate to repair the damages, and was really surprised and pleased at what a nice experience it was. I am used to car-repair stuff being stressful and a little bit sleazy feeling, but these guys (and gals) were really friendly and upfront and went out of their way to answer my questions and keep me informed of my options.
I would absolutely recommend them and (while I hope I don't have to spend any more time in an auto body shop anytime soon!), I would go to them with full confidence in the future.

The Idea pet stop is a nice little neighborhood pet shop with items available for a wide variety of animals, from cats and dogs to small mammals to birds, fish and reptiles.
This is sort of a combination pet supplies shop and pet shop itself, and it is not uncommon to stop in and find a littler of puppies waiting to be adopted inside.
My main experience with this shop, aside from general browsing and picking up the occational animal treat was when one of my fish seemed to have a disease. I went into the shop, described the symptoms, and the very friendly and helpfull woman at the front desk was able to identify the problem and give me a treatment (that worked.)
Whether or not you need something, it is a fun place to stop in and look at all of the animals.

I went into Speedy Reedy looking for a wetsuit for open water swimming. What I found in this cute little Burk-Gilman trail shop was the husband and wife team who own the shop, and we super knowledgeably and friendly and really helpful as i tried to wade my way through the variety of wetsuit options.
This is the sort of place where you get the feeling that the owners (who are also the shop keepers) actually do the activitiies that they sell gear for, and as a result actually have some really good insights.
I would strongly suggest this shop for anybody looking for triatholon equipment or advice.

This discount theater is a fixture of the Admiral district of West Seattle. Once upon a time it was a really inexpensive theater too, but has slowly been introduceing rate hikes over the years that bring the average movie price to about that of a regular matinee- still a nice deal, but nothing like the true discount theaters. This theater doesn’t really have the feeling of a funky old discount movie theater, rather it feels more like a sort of run-down versian of a blockbuster type theater.
Overall this place is great, and it seems to be quite popular with the kids/teens. My experience ist that they strictkly mind the movie ratings and carefully restrict access to movies that somebody is not old enough for.
It’s hard to complain about a discount theater, even if it is only a couple of bucks cheaper than a regular one.

Coleman pool is a really unique pool in the Seattle Public Pool System- not only is it one of two public outdoor pools, it is the only public saltwater pool, AND it is located right on the beach at Lincoln park.
On a sunny day, this pool can be quite crowded with kids during the freeswim, and the lap swims seem pretty crowded on even the less than hot days. The water is generally pretty clean, but I have experienced days where it is quite murky. There is a plexi-glass wind shield between the pool and the beach, but on windy days the pool area can still be quite chilly.
There is a low dive, a highdive, and a water slide all available for use (with an additional payment) during freeswim.
This is a great place to go with kids, and there is a sizeable pool deck with lounge chairs for warming up and sun bathing.

Andrews Bay in Seward Park is a great place to do some open water swimming. It is relativly sheltered from the wind and chop, and it is a no wake zone for boats which means that they'll generally be going quite a bit slower.
There are some rules about where you are allowed to swim, and these can be seen on the Seattle Parks and Recreations Depts website (or do a google search for "open water swim seattle"), but I've never heard of swimmers getting hassled by the police in this area.
There is a large amount of triatholon swimmers who like to practice here, and the distances between landmarks are pretty well known. The standard place to enter the water is just north of the Pottery building, a good 50 feet from the swimming beach at a little jetty.
