For great selection in electronic parts without the fluff and inflated prices of Radio Shack, go to Baynesville Electronics. Located on Joppa Road in Towson, MD, Baynesville has fair prices on everything, with very friendly and helpful staff who can give you advice on anything you need. If you can't find something (which is believable given the store's size), the staff knows where everything is and can cater to nearly every electronic hobbyist's need. The prices are competitive, but not fantastic, but there's really nowhere else to go for what they carry.

On the outside, Tenpachi looks like just another hole in the wall that someone cleared out and set up shop in. The ceiling is exposed, the interior walls are brick, and the furniture is sparse. But what they lack in appearance they make up for with low prices ($11 for a shampoo and a cut) and friendly staff. I've never had a bad haircut there, and they always get me out of there fast.

With a similar atmosphere to many of the larger chain alleys, but not quite the size, Patterson is a good option for anyone in the Baltimore area looking for a nice place to bowl a few frames. Their prices are very reasonable, and their website has a printable coupon for a free shoe rental. Their snack bar has a modest-sized menu of good food.

If you're looking for a nice little hardware store and don't want to pay hyper-inflated Radio Shack prices, then you've come to the right place. While they obviously don't have the selection of a Home Depot or a Lowe's, you'll get more attention there and are more likely to come away with exactly what you wanted, instead of ten other things you noticed on the shelf and thought you might need.

The Rotunda is a nice little theater, owned by the same people who run the more famous Senator theater on York Rd. Featuring two screens, the Rotunda shows a strange mix of movies, mostly larger-budget feature films but occasionally mixing in an independent or little-known film here and there. The prices are reasonable, the seats are comfortable, and I've never had a bad experience there.

The Senator Theater is a historic landmark with perpetual appeal. The second-largest feature film theater in the country behind the Chinatown theater in LA, the Senator hosts world premieres of many major motion pictures, and even has its own little walk of fame in the front showcasing the various films which have premiered there over the years. There is only one screen, and 900 seats, and aside from possibly the first couple rows, there are no bad seats in the house. The staff is very friendly and competent, and their collection of movie memorabilia is impressive. A must-see for any movie aficionado.

The Charles is a great venue for seeing indie films or other films which, for one reason or another, are not widely distributed. Located in northern Baltimore near Penn Station, the nearby restaurants make it great for a night out. The theater itself has a very cozy atmosphere, reasonable prices on concessions, and walls covered in classic movie posters. One thing to remember is they only accept cash, so leave your American Express at home.

Eddie's Market is a good source for a wide variety of foods you wouldn't expect to be carried at normal supermarkets. From ethnic foods to vegetarian/vegan, they carry eccentric foods as well as the normal small market fare. The prices are not amazing, but given their location right next to Johns Hopkins University and the selection they provide, it's worth it to pay a little more.

Now without competition since the closing of the convenience store across the street, University Mini-Mart is open 24 hours and carries a wide variety of merchandise. While the prices make it unrealistic for use as a primary source of groceries, if you live nearby and need some cereal at three in the morning, it can easily fill your needs. The deli counter also makes excellent sandwiches made to order, and though often crowded, service is fast and reliable.

Akbar has great food in a nice, quiet atmosphere, as is the case with most Indian restaurants in the area, I've found. The selection on their buffet rotates from day to day, and they have a good variety of vegetarian options among all their carnivorous Indian food as well. The buffet always includes Nan bread, and they even have desserts. The restaurant itself is in a kind of basement with a window, recessed from the sidewalk in order to let light in without letting the prying eyes of passers-by in as well. Overall a very enjoyable experience.
