When my 25 year old stove died I called the landlord to get it replaced. I was told that I would get a reconditioned stove that was the same ugly, poorly designed model that just passed on to appliance heaven, actually probably the other place below. I asked if I could get something else and my landlord said he would give me $150 towards any stove I wanted to buy. Next stop, Gringer and sons. For not that much more than the landlord's allowance I got a stove that not only looks good but works well.
The salesmen at Gringers look like used car salesmen but they were helpful and I got a good deal.

Economy foam, ah, the name says it all. If you need a new mattress or you just want to put a slab of upholstered foam on that plywood box you just made to use it for a couch you just found the place to go. They have expensive memory foam mattresses too like everyone else, but who needs them for that. Stick to the cheap stuff or making pillows for your new couch.

The store is beyond description. It is a hole in the wall on the south side of East Houston Street and looks like it was taken over by squatters. There is very little room to walk around because of the density of inventory but if you like movies like Brazil and The City of Lost Children and you want to decorate your home like that genre or maybe make a film yourself then this is the place. Jars filled with things that once lived, appliances from the early 20th century, it's all weird.

You don't have to go to Tibet and the Himalayas to get outfitted with the clothing you've seen in the movies or the jewelry you've seen in magazines. The next freezing New York winter day remember that this is the place to get one of those wild hats that will save you from hypothermia.
I can't say that the staff has ever been particularly friendly or helpful when I've stopped in but what the heck, you can't get this stuff at Gap.

You don't need a wayback machine to get vintage unused and brand new but 1950's looking children's clothes. This store has so much to offer you will leave with full shopping bags and a smile if this style appeals to you. The owner of the business and her staff couldn't be nicer and treat every visitor like an old time best friend. So to recap, about the only thing missing for any fan of the middle of the 20th century is a cheap Sear's TV with the Mickey Mouse Club on it.

If you have a craving for all that stuff you wanted or had a kid and don't know where to get then this is your lucky day. Little toys that aren't part of the merchandising program of a blockbuster movie, postcards with the photos of 1950's movie starts, cheap old fashion Japanese toys before they got so slick and too much to list here. The staff never seems to be aware of the customers I have walked out without buying something because the woman at the cash register was too involved in a phone conversation to help me, but maybe that's just my experience. It's a cool store so go anyway if you're curious and plan to go out shopping.

Every candy ever made at a discount price, well not quite every candy but it seems like it and it is overwhelming. I've gone in this store when my sweet tooth took over control of my brain and walked out empty handed because I just couldn't decide what to get. If you can't eat candy for some reason they also have a large assortment of nuts but be prepared for the smell of sugar and chocolate in the air.

Broadway Panhandler has been in Soho since 1976 and has been a terrific source for all cooks from homemaker to professional chef. Name a major brand or an offbeat one and they probably have it at a discount price. Another good thing to keep in mind is that they offer knife sharpening for all of you who made a big investment in German steel.
