Kate's Paperie has it all when it comes to the niche that it conquered. You can sit down with one of the staff and order stationary or announcements to be printed that will be impressive. There are collections of photo albums, fountain pens, blank greeting cards, blank stationary and the best wrapping paper anywhere. They even have lenticular screen plastics, you know the stuff that has a picture that changes like eyes blinking.
Check out the website for more information.

Do you like toys? No, I take that back. Do love toys? Do you have a Jones for toys and have to own lots of them? Besides all the Star Wars characters have you discovered the world of Japanese toys with all the variants? Do you know about the stuff coming out of Hong Kong? Do not pass go, do not collect $200 (but do bring your credit card) and go immediately to Toy Tokyo which will be like paradise for you.
You can get a sense of what's available by going to their site, which sadly like so many other cool stores' sites doesn't do the store justice.

This store gives you the opportunity to buy clothes with a French flair for children up to the age of 10. The website only has a very small sampling of what is in the store and sadly the photography isn't the best so a trip to Soho is required to see how great the clothes really are.

This store was here before the rush was on to gentrify the area. It's an artisan business selling signed colorful glass objects such as vases, lamp shades and bowls. The uniqueness of each piece makes it so this is not an under $20 gift store but you are getting what you pay for. There are photos on the website which are updated often, making it easy to keep track of what's available.

The big chain bookstores are impressive but a real independent bookstore in the neighborhood is warm and comforting. They make an effort to have a broad enough range of titles to appeal to anyone looking for a good read and they are successful. There is a tea house on premises instead of a coffee shop and a magazine rack that is essentially a free library of periodicals.
Events are scheduled often so check the website to see what you might be interested in before you miss it.

Karikter is the kind of store that has dozens of things that you don't need but it doesn't take long in this store to rationalize why you have to buy something. Whether you're a fan of Alessi, TinTin or Philippe Starck the shelves are filled the best of examples of what will surely be the kitsch of the end of the 21st century.
The staff has traditionally been a little uncaring but I stopped in recently and there was actually a terrific young woman working there for a change. I can't imagine what happened to change their policy.

This is just one of many little stores in the northern part of Little Italy, I will never call it NOLITA. The bags are simple and cool. The prices aren't exactly cheap but the bags are far less expensive than in many of the other bag stores that are all over the city.
If you are looking for a new bag take a look at their site and there's a chance your feet will take you out the door to buy one of theirs.

Kim's Video is like a movie rental store in an independent movie with a quirky staff and interior design. It's all good though, and the staff seems to have somehow memorized every movie ever made. If you are at a loss as to what movie to rent the employees' picks are the best. Now for the really good part, they have movies that you will not find under the same roof anywhere else and they have the cheapest rentals in New York. If you think $1.25 for an older film or TV show, even just released, or $2.00 for a just released film that was in the theaters last month is expensive than there is no pleasing you.
