Frankly, I like men a little more masculine than you are likely to find at Manray. These are the "boys" that go on shopping trips downtown to Kenneth Cole on the weekends, not the men that go running with their Labrador retrievers around Greenlake. Anyway, I am in a relationship, so I am not supposed to be noticing this kind of thing. Drinks are overpriced, the place gets too crowded and the bar tenders can be real bitches. However, the bar is space-age cool and any place that will play Laura Branigan and Cathy Dennis in the same night is all right by me.

For two years I lived in the same block as this place. A great space looking pretty unchanged for the last 80 years or so. It's beer and wine only but they have good beer, by the pitcher and it's cheap. They have a couple of pool tables. Affable staff, two big windows that look out toward the Pergola and the brick buildings of Pioneer Square (outdoor seating during the summer.) The space is big enough with high ceilings that you can smoke without blowing it in someone's face. Although i now live on Queen Anne, I still go over occasionally and friends always insist on going there when in town. They also let me bring my Husky in and let him sit in the window. Gotta love that.

I love Pike Place Market. A completely unique Seattle experience. i love the cheap flowers, the rows of fresh vegetables and yes, the fried fish. I love the fish throwers who freak people out with that big fish that they encourage people to touch and then have its mouth open. I love the newsstand and scanning through magazines for free hoping not to get caught by the cashier (who cracks me up.) I love it when it's kind of quiet there and it's pouring rain out while your safe inside. Caveat: I would not be caught dead there during the tourist season from memorial through Labor Day.

I grew up in Portland and we shopped at Thriftway sometimes. I remember that Thriftways were gross. i think we were on a budget and they were less expensive than glamor grocers like Safeway and Albertsons. Imagine my surprise when returning to the Northwest 15 years later, that Thriftways no longer bite. In fact, the one in West Seattle is great. Expensive, but a pleasant shop. And their take-home food area make me salivate. Compare hours-old fried egg rolls at Safeway to a fresh prime rib sandwich at Thriftway. Actually they changed their name a year ago or so to Metropolitan Market. Fitting since all signs of Thriftway are long gone. And, there is certainly nothing thrifty about shopping here.

Chartreuse in a retro cool furniture and home accessories store located on First Avenue north of Pike Place market. Sweet new items mix with vintage mid century furniture, some of which is reasonably affordable. Store has a smart buyer. Nerd Alert: They have ultra modern silverware used in Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey for sale. If your food sucks, no one will notice.

I will generally do one of two thing going out for breakfast on the weekends, Dim Sum in the International District or the 5-Spot restaurant at the top of Queen Anne. It is not the best breakfast I have ever had, but easily the best in Seattle. Fresh quality ingredients, imaginative chefs, generous portions and nice atmosphere. Every time family and friends visit, a stop will be made here.

This store is so good that I will risk venturing to Pike Place Market during the tourist season just to get a slice of one of the many kinds of pate offered. Their huge selection of international cheeses and eclectic array of gourmet food items keep me going back again and again. If you like good food, this is a great place to go and plan a menu.

SAM is not all bad. The Noguchi show is a step in the right direction and the Olympic Sculpture Park looks like it will be a lasting and positive addition to the city. Seattle is a world class city and we need a world class museum. SAM fall well short. If this were Portland (ME) Pasadena or Pittsburgh, SAM would rock. But, this is Seattle and SAM is stodgy, prosaic and predictable. Boring classics and safe traveling shows. It even smells a bit like an old person's house when you enter the very 1980's looking building. I say this because I want to love SAM and want them to pay attention during this expansion period. How about some modern art? How about straying from the straight and narrow once in awhile?

I hate chain restaurants and love dive restaurants. I find the clientele at dives interesting and often the architecture is untouched. Even if the food is merely okay, it is at least an experience. I draw the line at Lemieux's. Located right across the street from the Starbuck's headquarters, I banked that it might be really good. It was a total bust. Rancid and inedible. Not even the chain smoking drunks in back at 7:30 a.m. could make me go back for the "experience."
