There's a number of seriously good wine shops in Seattle, and although I wouldn't consider these guys among the best, they're solid for selection and fair on price. I'm not sure how much of their success is attributable to their location in the Market, but they've built out enough selection and a decent enough reputation to keep me coming back. They also carry complete lines of Reidel stems, which not every wine seller will do. Specialty include Northwest wines, especially Washington and Oregon, but the California section holds its own. I find myself stopping in mostly to try something interesting at a tasting or if I'm in the Market anyway.

Michelle Hamilton (of salon fame) started this place with the attitude that the best artists and cleanest game in town shouldn't be hard to find. She put the place in a conspicuous spot, and recruited some great talent to run the ink needles and piercing chairs. Whether you're a newbie to the body art scene, or have the Book of Kells inked on your torso, these guys are a fantastic place to get it done.

Where else can you catch your car wash attendants in black ties? This eco-friendly washspot is one of the best options for cleaning your car. This location is a combination of self-serve and automated washing (exterior machine, interior self) and the prices are more than reasonable ($7 for a basic wash) and the no-scratch equipment doesn't leave you wanting for a new paint job. Remember to tip the guy at the end ...

Got a creative bone in your body? Does it require a special backing, ribbon, or matte? De Medici Ming are the original specialty paper store in Seattle. Asian papers, Italian woven ribbons, and art cards and prints are all a part of this micro boutique. Although many of the items are expensive imports, there's always something affordable to walk away with as a souvenir.
If you're in downtown visiting and need a great card and gift, combine this for the former with a trip to the SAM store for a great present (its across the street).

There is an honest-to-goodness shipping point here, but the bulk of QAMD's business comes from their clever retail presence at the top of QA hill. Cards, clothes, and shoes are all fairly unique, and the addition of lingerie makes for pretty much the only place where you can get a panty and a parcel in the same spot. Items at this boutique don't come without a surprising price tag, but if you've got a special someone to buy for, why not get it here and have it overnighted?

Custom invitations, save-the-dates, and thank yous represent the penultimate touch of class, and these guys make it happen on a budget. If you've got a little more to spare, they can also consign calligraphy services, specialty graphics orders, and colors and papers not found anywhere else in town. The retail side of the store also merchandises great occasional cards that are well designed and have a distinct feel of their own. Every once in a while, I'll pop in to buy a card
that I know I'll need later, since their one-offs are gone for good after they're sold out.

Remember when auto mechanics were shifty, unscrupulous grease-monkeys? I'm sure you can still find those guys, but not here. The first time I had my Saab serviced here, I was blown away. They called beforehand to discuss service options and a diagnosis, they go out of their way to make sure you understand what needs to be done, what it will cost, and how fast they can do it -- and it does not deviate from those specs. Your car comes back clean, quite likely with a single flower on the dash, and its not uncommon to score a free t-shirt on pick-up. If you drive a Saab or Volvo, you'd be nuts to go anywhere else.

One of the best specialty grocers in Seattle. With a focus on Italian goodies, this find on the southern side of the Market is a great source for picnic supplies, hard-to-find ingredients, or if you're desperate, a slice and a soda (though you're better off with a decent serving of their breads, meats, chesses if you're in a rush). If you drink wine, their section and library in the back will knock your socks off. If you need culinary supplies from Mother Italy, and you're downtown, this is your spot.

What happens when eight designer-artists get together in a shared retail space and start showing off their wares? You get "venue". This collective has everyting from one-of-a-kind print press cards, to unique bags and purses, to calligraphy-scribed home furnishings. Best of all, you get access to the people that make things you're shopping for, and you're able to ask whatever you want about materials, quality, and construct. Top highlight: check out the laptop carrier from Red Delicious.
Be sure to hit this one on Ballard "Second Saturdays" and see the neighborhood market in full swing.

A classic among Seattle coffee shops. And now that they've got fully-functional and free wireless, there's no reason to go anywhere else. If you're particular to decaf, these guys have some of the best unleaded espresso in town. Queen Anne is the original, but all the locations are consistent with their products. Baristas are all great, and if you get hung up in line, try your hand at the 3-D frog puzzle.
