NOTE: This is not a textbook store. Magus Books always has an eclectic selection of used paperbacks in the front display window, often on scholarly or historical subjects. In the spring and summer there’s often a discount cart out on the sidewalk, meriting a quick perusal as you walk to class or about your business in the University District. Step inside and browse the narrow stacks of used books on esoteric subjects, or just enjoy listening to the banter of the patrons and employees. It’s everything you could want in a college district bookstore.

Lake Union Mail feels like it’s in a time-warp. It truly is the great American neighborhood store where the people are friendly and completely know their stuff. If you’re sending a package, drop in during the daytime when the owner is there—off the top of his head he knows the best service to use at the absolute best price after seeing and weighing the package. Amazing knowledge and no pandering to one specific shipping service like at a national chain.

Video Quest is your run of the mill indie video store—small hole-in-the-wall space, disinterested hipster behind the counter and a great selection of independent films by a wide range of directors. But, like most indies, they only stock a copy or two of each new release, making it infuriatingly tough to find what you want sometimes. They’re conveniently located and usually you can find something to watch, so if you live in Eastlake, drop in and check it out.

I used Eastlake Mail a lot when I first moved here. I shipped packages, and sent and received faxes. My wife bought a book of twenty stamps there once, though, and they tacked on a hefty $1.60 markup. Service is good and location is great though. Good neighborhood resource.

I used Eastlake Mail a lot when I first moved here. I shipped packages, and sent and received faxes. The service was good and the prices seemed ok (they had fair markup on postage). Really friendly people—they seemed to know everybody that came in to check his or her mailbox, etc. Good general neighborhood resource.

Eastlake Cleaners is conveniently located on the main drag and does a good job on standard drycleaning. My wife had them do some alterations though, and not only were they super-pricey, she also said they did a lousy job of following her instructions. BUT, the drycleaning is fine, with relatively standard pricing and same-day service available.

Louisa’s Bakery is an Eastlake institution. On weekday mornings, the tables inside are full of chattering neighbors, business people and groups of various interests and activities. And in the spring in summer, people snap up the tables on the sidewalk out front and sip iced coffee with their pets (the pets generally prefer water). For good reason—the pastries are big, fluffy and buttery (DELICIOUS!) and the coffees and teas are consistent. Eclectic decor and free wi-fi.

Alladin Gyro-cery is located on the main drag of University Way NE near UW. It’s a hole in the wall spot near a Starbucks with an Ali-Baba character on the sign outside. The Gyros are huge and tasty with lots of spicy lamb and tzatziki sauce. Read some of the Muslim community literature stacked by the front counter while you wait to take the grub home. I think you can also eat in the sit-on-a-floor-pillow setup in the back, but I haven’t yet.

Simply Thai is located in one of a cluster of strip malls near Southcenter mall in Tukwila. There’s a Target and Starbucks in the shopping center, with basically every other chain store you can think of in close vicinity. The restaurant has all the regular Thai fare—noodle dishes, curries, big bowls of noodle soup. The food is really tasty and the prices are good. Take a break from shopping and drop in at off-hours, since it can get crowded at peak meal times.

Finn McCool’s is a smoky “Irish pub” on University Way in the U-district. The staff is friendly and grub is good for bar food. A hummus plate appetizer came with soft, warm pita and veggies; the fish & chips are lightly fried and flavorful, with a tasty dill-y tarter sauce. Happy hour has great deals—the $3.75 fish and chips were more than enough to fill me up (despite the friendly warning of my waitress) with two big pieces of fish and a huge bowl of fries. Watch the foot traffic on University Way from the deck seating during spring and summer.
