The Silver Cloud Inn on Lake Union offers stunning view of the lake and downtown, as well as proximity to Eastlake, UW, Capital Hill, City Center and other neighborhoods and points of interest.
There are Silver Cloud Inns in locations all over Washington and Oregon, and all seem to be consistently clean, comfortable, amenity-ed (sic) and reasonably priced.
If you live in the city, your place is probably too small for your in-laws anyway.

The Egyptian Theatre in Capital Hill is home to the Seattle International Film Festival, billed as “the largest in North America.” But for most of the rest of the year, it’s an eclectic home to independent and foreign films.
The film selection, quirky décor and beer and wine at the snack bar make for a good night out.
They often have midnight movies that are appealing to folks willing to sit through a movie at that hour—recently it was “The Godfather.”

Shiga’s Imports is crammed full of Asian trinkets and tchotchkes, some functional, many purely decorative.
Need a stainless steel chopstick set? They’ve got it. Need some little porcelain china dog-lion thingys? They probably have a dozen different sizes.
My wife has been buying the same sake set (a really nice one) for every wedding this year. This makes life incredibly easy.

The world’s largest bookstore seems like a bold claim until you get lost in Powell’s flagship store in Portland.
During the winter, it’s a place to escape the grey, wander the isles and wonder at the breadth and depth of the non-fiction titles. Or hole up in the café with a new paperback.
Whatever the circumstance, you’re unlikely to leave empty handed.

Twice sold tales offers a wide selection of used books, both fiction and non-fiction, with a large fantasy/sci-fi section for a store its size.
It would be a nice place to escape the noise and congestion of 45th street and lazily browse the isles, if it weren’t for the cats.
Now, I’m not a cat-hater, I just don’t like encountering them when I’m not expecting them (and they have a nasty habit of making that happen). And I think they made me surrender my backpack up front more to protect the cats than the books.
So enjoy yourself, but don’t get caught off guard (you might get hit with a flying hairball).

My wife and I checked out Velo Bikes when we were trying to find her a decent, comfortable used bike to ride a mile and a half to work. Velo was probably the wrong store for that—they’ve been around forever and are apparently very well known and connected to the competitive cycling community here.
The salesperson was really helpful and friendly though, even though it became clear pretty fast that she and my wife weren’t talking about the same kind of bike (they sell a lot of composite-material Bianchis and such).
It was a good move to come that way though, because we found a classic Schwinn road bike in the basement of the Value Village next to Velo for $20. The salesperson from Velo saw us wheeling it by and came out to admire it, give us advice and sell us some replacement parts.
I’m almost ashamed to say that we took it to another shop closer to home for the needed repairs.

The Mac Store in the U-district always grabs my attention when I walk by on 45th street—the clearance table is in plain sight through the window, always filled with esoteric accessories for your iPod or some software program that you didn’t know you needed.
Northwest owned and operated, The Mac Store is a less glamorous counterpart to the Apple company stores—more down-to-earth sales, service and keen advice rather than an extension of the all important brand.
But don’t worry, they have all the latest sleek toys and would love to show them to you anytime you wander in.

Like most almost-thirty males, I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about insurance (I shouldn’t have to worry about it, right?). So when I moved to Seattle, I just wanted to get everything taken care of in one marathon session. Frank Fu State Farm Insurance took care of me.
Locally owned and operated out of the same storefront for who knows how long; the agent’s assistant who helped me told me she’d been there for 12 years, and she was fantastic. She had great advice, didn’t push the sale on any product and pointed out all of the discounts we could take.
Car insurance for me and my new wife, renter’s insurance for the apartment, a liability umbrella, life insurance and all the crap that it turns out I need to be worried about at this stage of my life. She took care of it. In one afternoon. Bless that woman (but I can’t tell you her name).

I love places like the Neptune—faded glory movie palaces that have been reborn as showplaces for independent film.
With it’s good selection of films, mythological/nautical theme, chairs that really aren’t that hammered and beer wine at the snack bar, this place has it all. Even the belittling hipster arthouse theatre staff. But hey, it comes with the territory.
There are also special events from time to time—cult hero Bruce Campbell was there recently for a book signing and screening of his low-budget horror directorial debut.

NOTE: The phone number I included is bogus (if you couldn't already tell) I couldn't find a listing but you don't usually call laundromats ahead anyway).
I live in an apartment in Eastlake that has washer/dryer facilities on site, but I head to Washingtown when I’m short on quarters (no change machines at the apt.) or just want to get the wash done in a hurry. It’s good for that. And plenty of people feel totally safe driving away with their laundry going. But you can always count on at least one textbook nappy-bearded Northwest junkie to come slinking in for no apparent reason, or to be hanging out in front of the door. I’ve also been in there when street people and construction guys have snuck in to use the john, leaving that lovely smell in the air as you fold your clean wash. I know it’s a Laundromat, but I figured I’d just warn you beforehand.
