WUXTRY Atlanta is the type of record store where you go to “look for a record,” not drop in to snap up the latest new release.
In a cramped storefront near the Emory University campus, WUXTRY is stacked wall to wall with an eclectic selection of new and used CDs (you can find some gems at great prices), and classics on vinyl.
The selection of jazz, blues and bluegrass albums on both CD and vinyl is excellent.
And they do get a good selection of the latest CDs from mainstream and indie artists, but they only order a few copies. They always seem to go before I get there, forcing a guilt-inducing trip to search at the nearest big-box.

Athenians are fiercely loyal to WUXTRY downtown. And though I understand and respect the store’s history and fierce independence, I still avoid it like the plague.
Having dropped in periodically over a period of ten years, I was amazed at what incredible jerks always seemed to be half-asleep behind the counter, acting like you wrecked their high if you dared to ask a question (you probably did).
I remember one guy toward the end of my time at UGA who was actually friendly and helpful, and thought it was a miracle.
Walk by WUXTRY, check it out, then head down Broad to Schoolkids to hunt for a CD.

Thread Zeppelin is a stylish thrift store that perfectly fits its location in the hip, bohemian oasis of the East Atlanta Village.
They always have a great selection of used blue jeans, shoes and boots and vintage concert Tees. And who knows what else you’ll find when you duck in off the busy sidewalk for a break from the Hotlanta summer.
Check it out, and for not much $$, you can be as cool looking as the meticulously outfitted mannequins in the front window.

The no-frills-named Video Store on the south end of Little Five Points has a great selection, including all of the latest releases in independent and foreign films, obscure documentaries and classic cult films.
But it suffers from the classic indie rental store conundrum: huge selection, nothing ever in. It’s probably a sign that they have a large and loyal customer base, but why can’t they just buy a couple of extra copies of each $20 DVD? It’s not like they wouldn’t be rented.
I tried to be loyal to my friendly neighborhood indie rental store, but time after time found myself leaving disgusted and empty handed, headed for Blockbuster.

Criminal Records fits an astounding selection of albums in its cockeyed Little Five Points Storefront. Cds are displayed spine out behind glass in the massive, tall front counter.
Basically anything you could want, think or dream of is there—the most obscure indie releases, a huge selection of foreign imports and even rare limited releases and out of print albums.
They also have listening stations with all the latest releases, a selection of non-music items (obscure magazines, comic books, graphic novels, collectibles) and in-store performances from your favorite acts.
Put them to the test, they’ll have what you’re looking for.

Futon 123 sells futons, futon chairs and accessories for a variety of budgets from a convenient location on Aurora Ave in North Seattle.
I went there with my brother in law, who had moved here to attend law school. They had simple, budget-conscious offerings that fit his need, and I picked up a new cover for my futon that looked nice and didn’t cost too much.
There are other stores around Washington State, most in the metro Seattle area.

With a huge selection of groceries and general goods, Uwajimaya is a powerhouse of the International District.
Part of a chain of three Northwest stores, the Seattle location offers gifts and specialty items from the east, as well as a mind-blowing array of fresh foods, dried goods and packaged items.
They also have baked goods. I especially love the Ensaymadas from Goldilocks, a baking company and chain of Filipino restaurants in California. Mmmm . . . coconut.

Sure, most people go the UW Bookstore to buy textbooks, but it’s worth the trip for other things as well.
When I was looking for work, for instance, I took advantage of their selection and decent prices on fine papers for resumes (DO NOT BUY THIS TYPE OF STUFF AT KINKNO’S!)
They also have frequent sales on fiction and non-fiction books, and they have a great selection of $2 classic paperbacks on the third level.
It’s also a great place to find out what’s going on in the U-district, with readings, lectures and other events posted on the big calendars around the store.

Located in the International District, Dong Hing Market is like many other Asian food stores in the area, but it’s one of my favorites just because of its cleanliness, and the freshness and selection of its produce.
Get bok choy, Japanese eggplant or huge bunches of fresh green basil, perfect for stir-fries or your favorite recipes from the far east.
