You might not expect a town the size of Boulder to have a really good contemporary art museum, but that's where you'd be mistaken.
Boulder, you see, is a little town with big city cultural tendencies... or at least that's what we like to think. The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art does a pretty good job at this though with a range of eclectic exhibitions, lectures, and performance art. If you are an artist yourself, or even if you just aspire, there are workshops to be had.
To it's further credit, the staff of BMoCA is usually outside at the farmer's market with crafts for the kids.

When I first walked into The Bookworm, I was floored. It is undoubtedly the largest used book collection I have ever seen, and that was when they were in a low-ceilinged hovel by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
They've since moved to a nice, airy, high-ceilinged space on the West side of 28th Street and their collection is wonderfully organized. You get one quarter of the book's cover price for trade, and there's no way to walk out of there without spending some of the credit you've earned.

You just can't visit Boulder without visiting the Boulder Bookstore. It's the only game in town. Which is to say that it's one of the best independent bookstores still around that hasn't been squashed or marginalized by the huge corporate big boxes.
Boulder Bookstore has three and a half floors of books, a great kids' section, a used shelf, frequent author readings, and an adjacent cafe. The location at the West end of the Pearl Street Mall makes it inescapable.
Go there. Read.

And, if I'm hungry, there's a bagel shop next door. There's even music sometimes, the baristas are usually quite friendly, and everyone there knows my name.

This is a highly dependable Boulder family business. Tires, brakes, and various other automobile maintenance. I've been a regular there for years - snow tires on in the Fall and off in the Spring. And despite the fact that these guys do a brisk business during these times, I've never had to wait in a long line, and I've never been dissatisfied with the service they provided.

No - leave this place to the serious yuppie fitness addicts. If you can afford it, it's God's gift to the human body.

Billed as "Colorado's largest movie library," and don't doubt it. The Video Station has everything you'd ever want to lay your hands on. Foreign films from every nation, instructional films, sports movies, documentaries - all in addition to the usual fare that you'd find at a big chain. The coolest thing about this place is the staff, all of whom take their movies very seriously and are ever-ready with a dependable recommendation.

And besides the best NY style pizza available in Colorado, the tradition includes a relaxed dining atmosphere complete with pinball and television tuned to local sports, and a friendly staff.
