Where the Buffalo Roam is one of the coolest t-shirt shops, not just in Boulder, but anywhere. Upon my first visit to Boulder, I bought a shirt there. It was a Calvin and Hobbes rip-off that showed Calvin running nude with the caption, “Life is short. Play naked.”
I’ve bought a couple more shirts there since. The designs run the gamut from merely funny to outrageous, and some make me wonder about copy write infringement, but they are fun nonetheless. If you’re looking for a t-shirt to send to the friends back home, this is the place.

I have no idea for how long or with what frequency these folks have been churning out Sky Chairs, but I’ve seen them everywhere. They’re the chairs that hang from your trees, your porch, your ceiling – that suspend you in a web of canvas, rope and wooden dowels. They’ve come a long way, baby – with footrests and armrests, now! And they’re made right here in Boulder!
Their store is not easy to find, but if you want to buy directly from their storefront, between 22nd and 23rd street in the alley off of Pearl Street you will find Sky Chairs.

Peppercorn is a home store on Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall. It’s huge space is chock full of cookware, tableware, linens, pots and pans, kitchen gadgets, gourmet foods, books, and more. It’s almost impossible for a home owner to walk the narrow aisles between high shelves of merchandise and not find something new or interesting for the home.

Boulder Ski Deals is one of many ski shops in town, but perhaps the best of the independents. They are a great ski and snowboard shop with competitive rental and purchase prices. Both my wife and I recently bought badly needed ski boots there, and the staff was extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

I bought my first futon from this place years ago, and this was the store that turned me on to the concept of the inner spring futon (more comfortable than a normal futon). Take a peak.

The Boulder Arts and Crafts Coop sells the art of a wide variety of artists from around Colorado and the country. Their selection is not so much about quantity as quality, and you can find some brilliant art there. We love the place., and used to go their more frequently when we didn’t have young children prone to running about and knocking things off of shelves.
Support your local independent artists.

Hapa has a sparse stainless steel design aesthetic and a small Zen river that flows along the bar. With modern jazz coloring the background, it’s a wonderful atmosphere in which to enjoy copious amounts of sushi, particularly if someone else is picking up the tab. The sushi is delicious and I’ve never had bad service.

Silver and Gold is not a beauty salon. It’s a barber shop. It doesn’t smell or look very pretty, and they don’t have an attractive display of expensive hair products for you to buy. You can’t get a manicure, pedicure, or facial peal there. There’s no hair colorist.
Silver and Gold is a few old men in a dingy shop with hair strewn about. They cut your hair for a reasonable price and they do it well, so that you don’t have to go to one of those orange-trimmed hair chains. They don’t ask for much money for this service.

Pedestrian shops is the grooviest shoe store in Boulder. It is where all the in-the-know footwear types get their Birkenstocks, Borns, Keanes, Simples, Crocs, and assorted other high dollar shoes.
They used to have a discontinued rack in the back for the cheaper of us lot, but I'm not sure if that's been discontinued or not.
Celebrity sighting note: Jennifer Garner, when she was recently in town shooting a movie, bought ten pairs of Crocs for friends and family at Pedestrian Shops.
