University of Pennsylvania is a locally famous (or infamous) member of the Ivy League in Philadelphia. It is the nation's oldest university with the first medical school. Its particular strengths include its medical school, Wharton for business types, its law school, the veterinary school, and its hospital system. It also has world-class libraries like Van Pelt. Unfortunately, security considerations make much, if not all, of the campus inaccessible to visitors who cannot usually enter buildings or must enter during business hours and sign-in. In particular, the "LOVE" statue in the central walkway is featured on postcards sold throughout the city.

Rittenhouse Square is a park and public gathering place that borders an upscale residential and shopping district in Center City Philadelphia. The park is full of benches and fountains where local residents like to walk their dogs, sit reading the newspaper, and picnic on the grass especially during nice weather. In the evening, it also occasionally features free music concerts. The slight disadvantage is the park tends to be overrun with homeless people sleeping on the benches and can be unsafe after dark.

The National Constitution Center is also a must-visit for a historic tour of Philadelphia - it traces the history of the document, explains in kid-accessible displays the history of the Constitution and early US history, and sells in the museum store lots of neat souvenirs to bring back to friends and family. The National Constitution Center can seem a little fluffy and content-light occasionally but it is worth a visit if not a whole afternoon.

The famous Liberty Bell with its crack is displayed in a glass pavillion in the historic center of Philadelphia conveniently located next to the Constitution Center and Independence Hall. The Liberty Bell was most famously rung during the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. The glass pavillion displays the bell in a striking fashion and gets you get arms' length from it - close enough to study its crack and read the inscription. The site can be quite crowded on holiday weekends or around July 4th so it's worth trying to see on an weekday or off weekend day (ie, not the 4th or Labor Day).

The Philadelphia Zoo is America's first zoo and it has recently been extensively renovated to include new attractions and better provisions. In particular, the Philadelphia Zoo is known for its variety of big cats, its parrot house, its nice petting zoo for children, and its rides (all of which unfortunately cost additional money) such as the Swan Boat ride which can set a romantic mood to a zoo outing for a date. The Zoo can also be rented for weddings or other special occasions for something different and memorable.

In addition to books, it also sells lab coats, instruments, medical clogs, and various other supplies. It also offers an internet based mail order service. The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts is the new home for the Philadelphia Orchestra. The theater was designed by architect Rafael Vinoly and sits on Broad Street anchoring the Philadelphia Avenue of the Arts. The main draw is the Philadelphia Orchestra which plays classics like Messiah during the holidays but also incorporates modern acts into their performances such as percussive pieces featuring steel drums. The lobby is beautiful and offers many refreshments during intermission such as glasses of champagne and rich chocolate brownies. A must-see while in Philadelphia. The tickets are pricey however and the cheap student seats are only sold an hour before a show based on vacancies - surely the theater could make it easier for a low income student to enjoy the arts.
