2400 Chestnut Apartments feature many ammenities - a concierge and garage attendant 14 hours a day, a gym that is also open round the clock, a shuttle to University City and Center City in the mornings and afternoons, an on-site garage offering the cheapest parking in Center City, and free laundry on every floor. The building has studios, one bedrooms, and two bedrooms although the two bedrooms can be really hard to come by since people tend to live here for years on end. The building is heavily populated by Penn professional students, medical residents, and professionals. The rents are definitely on the high end as are the electric bills (electricity is not included, water is). More information is available at www.2400chestnut.com.

The Trocadero Theater is located in Chinatown very near the restaurant Penang (which I also reviewed, for a good before or after show meal). It has punk shows most days of the week in a charmingly grimy setting. The drink specials are offered most nights making it a fairly inexpensive night out. On Mondays, they show old or current movies which you can get into for $3 which goes towards your first drink. It's a fun evening out especially if you like local punk bands.

Last Halloween my friend and I went to the Halloween show at the famous prison where Al Capone was held. The atmosphere before you begin ups the creepiness factor as you stand waiting in the dark prison yard listening to a video on the prison. The haunted house portion itself is extensive, taking a while to get through. However, it may be scarier for younger children. I found the environment of the prison itself to be sufficiently frightening that some of the haunted house decorations actually detracted (in particular, a neon room seemed more cartoony and silly than frightening). I would love to go back to take the daytime historic tour which is also about a third of the price. The haunted house is worth seeing but perhaps seeing the prison alone is better.

The United Artists Theater shows typical Hollywood blockbusters and at any given time has a wide selection. It is not however as new or nice as the Bridge on Walnut St. although its prices as similar. It lacks the bar/lounge area and the upscale snacks. It also tends to draw teenagers heavily to its movies so it is not the best place for a quiet night out or a family oriented night. Parking is plentiful but is under the freeway so can appear frightening at night.

Ritz at the Bourse, like the Ritz 5 Theater, offers arthouse fare and the more thoughtful Hollywood pictures. It is owned by the same parent company as the Ritz 5. However, it has more screens than the Ritz 5 which has a paultry one screen. It also has the student/senior discounts as well as the Wednesday night showing discounts. The snacks here are equally gourmet while still including favorites like popcorn.

Center Bowling Lanes provides adequate lanes at adequate prices but the experience is not special. For one thing, it is too well-lit instead of being more rock n' bowl as I prefer. It also does not play much in the way of music. It is also a dry bowling alley which is a disappointment to anyone hoping for a pitcher of beer with their bowling. It's also difficult to find with some of the streets on the way appearing dangerous even to drive down. If you are not a serious bowler and just want a fun night out with friends, you could do better than this place.

Class of 1923 Ice Rink is associated with the University of Pennsylvania and offers hockey, freestyle skating, and Saturday night skates during the school year. The Saturday night skates are especially popular for the popular music, the lighting, and the chance for UPenn undergrads to go either on dates or to meet people. Lessons are also offered.

Trophy Bikes is located between West Philly and Center City. It has a very extensive selection of bikes ideal for getting around Philly including the Dahon folding bikes which are useful for commuters or those afraid of having their bikes stolen or damaged (a MAJOR problem in Philly). In addition, bikes that they don't have at Trophy Bikes can be ordered for you. The employees are knowledgeable, let you try out the bikes, and can recommend the best model for your needs. The only disadvantage is that Trophy Bikes, as evident from its name, is no Walmart - you won't find severe markdowns so it's not the best store for the budget conscious. Also no used bikes.

Sweat Gym is not especially large or frilly but it offers the key services I look for in a gym. It has a wide variety of aerobic equipment like ellipticals and treadmills each with its own TV screen built-in so you can work out to your own personal TV show without being bothered by others (headphones included). It also has an extensive collection of weight machines and free weights. It offers an essential list of classes. The major disadvantage (or advantage, depending on one's view) is that the gym fronts a busy street with floor to ceiling windows - you can watch all the passersby and they can watch you while you work out so it's not made for the shy or body-conscious.

Septa runs the trains and buses that provide public transportation around Philadelphia. In particular, the Septa R1 train goes to all the terminals in the airport twice an hour and returns to several sites in Center City including 30th Street Station which is the central hub connecting to other Septa trains and to all other trains in the city for only $5.50. The other rails are a boon to commuters providing rides to and from the Main-Line and surrounding suburbs conveniently for only a couple of dollars a ride or for an unlimited monthly pass.
