Cave Exploring Near Pittsburgh

Friday, August 19, 2005
Laurel Caverns offers the largest cave in Pennsylvania for exploration. Guided 3 hour tours are available which take you the approximately 500 m down to the cave bottom and back up again over sandstone rocks. The tour will have you literally climbing and crawling over rocks so it is better suited to people in reasonable athletic shape who don't mind getting really really dirty. In the summer, the bats are gone so the cave is free of wildlife (and insects, which is a bonus). The less athletically inclined can explore the top part of the caves and watch a light show or play mini-golf inside the cavern. There are showers (coin-operated) and picnic areas on the premises for making a day of it and to spare your car the caked on mud and dirt.
