This is the only place in the area to catch first-run independent films on a regular basis. There's only 2 screens, and they don't always get the top stuff right away, but it's better than nothing. They do seem to have a passion for what they do -- there are usually some production notes available about most of the films, and there's a good newsletter you can get by e-mail every week. The physical space is less than ideal, but they seem to do their best with it. The lounge area and concessions are basic, but reflect real effort on the part of management. The screening rooms are small and kind of dingy, with tiny screens, but the sound and projection are good.

Tons of novelty cards and gag gift items, without being excessively crude or vulgar. Hey, sometimes you need a joke birthday card. If so, this is the place.

The name of this place says it all...it's neato, and they've got burritos, and not much else. The burritos are huge and tasty, and will have you nodding off after lunch if you down a whole one. There's a good variety of ingredients available so you can build your own burrito, or you can go right off the menu or choose one of the daily specials. There really aren't any side items available, so be in the mood for a big ol' heap o' beans wrapped in a tortilla, and you'll be happy.

Jackson House is famous for their burgers, and they are good, but they also have some of the best hoagies in town (although in Central PA they call them "subs"). It's tough to figure out the differences among some of them, as they all seem to have most of the same ingredients, but don't worry about it, they're all good. The place itself is a hole in the wall, dingy and narrow, and you usually have to stand in line to order, then wait around until your food is ready. Some people are put off by this, and the service-with-attytood, but if you can deal with it, you'll get one of the best sandwiches in the area.

Formerly at the Broad Street Market in midtown Harrisburg, Sophia's has expanded its menu in a new, larger location on the West Shore. Dozens of great, fresh sandwiches and desserts are now offered during daytime hours Monday through Saturday. The marinated roast beef sandwich is a favorite, but there are many others to choose from. They also serve breakfast.

Panera has an OK selection bread and baked goods, and an OK selection of sandwiches, salads and other eat-in/take-out items. Their selection is way better than most grocery stores, but not as good as some of the better bakeries or cafes. However, the combination, if not the range, of offerings earns them high marks. Quality of products is, again, good but not great.

These guys have been there a long time, and I'm sure they're feeling the pinch from Whole Foods. Essene is not as inviting or comfortable, and can't match WF's selection of prepared foods. But there's a good selection of organic and health-conscious dry goods and groceries, and it's probably a little bit cheaper overall.
