As a student in Cambridge I survived on happy hour at Grendel's. Many of Grendel's dishes in miniature are available during happy hour if you purchase a drink. The atmosphere here is quite friendly and very cozy. Service is very good for this type of establishment and the barkeep is particularly affable. Grendel's serves American style food with the occasional fusion dish thrown in for good measure.

Henrietta's Table is a long established feature in the Charles Hotel in Cambridge. It serves a hearty mix of innovative, new england inspired appetizers, including the Maine Rock Crab and Corn Chowder with Smoked Bacon. Its menu contains nothing complicated, but the simple spread of seafood and meat dishes (and one vegetarian) will surely leave one highly satisfied after a meal. Its dessert menu is likewise inspired by traditional favorites in New England, including two varieties of bread pudding. Surprisingly affordable, dinner costs an average of fifteen to twenty five dollars a person. Brunch here is also very good and comes with a New York Times.

The back streets of Cambridge has long hidden one of the most dynamic restaurants in town, Harvest. It does a rotating menu of new england seafood dishes and various kinds of grilled meats. The steak there was supposedly the Dalai Lama's favorite on his trip to Harvard. I didn't know that Tibetan Buddhist can eat meat either, but they apparently can. Because of its location away from the busy streets, excellent service, and wonderful lunch menu, it is the faculty's favorite place to think up various schemes to say, overthrow the president of the university. Dinner is thirty to forty a person. Lunch, brunch, and private meals are available. Service at Harvest is impeccable.

Good tex mex/cajun can be hard to come by in the northern reaches of the country. That is why Border Cafe, located in Cambridge, is a gem to be treasured. Drinks here are served cold and strong. There are a number of different margarita's to choose from here. The menu consists of two main sections-fajitas and creole food. There is also a section for vegetarians. Prices here are very reasonable with dinner for meat eaters priced from nine to fifteen dollars. Vegetarians pay even less and can obtain a reasonable meal for around eight dollars. Overall, service is good but can be slow during peak hours.

Whenever I start to really miss Europe I try-and sometimes succeed!-to treat my depression with a visit to Cafe Pamplona. It is not just the indifferent waiters or the exceptionally strong coffee (no decaf served here!) that make me feel like I have escaped to Paris-it is the sense that time has stopped at Cafe Pamplona and no matter what happens around it my chain smoking chess playing friends will always be outside on the patio waiting for me. This establishment has indoor and outdoor seating and a limited, inexpensive menu.

Bertucci's is an east coast chain that serves very good pizza. The inside of the restaurant is well lit and cozy. Often there is a long wait on the weekends but takeout is available. There are some dishes that change seasonally such as the shellfish menu or the cuisine of Rome specials. Pasta is tolerable here but the real star is the pizza's. The Carmine with caramelized onions is especially tasty as is the Margherita. An individual pizza costs around ten dollars while a larger pie will set you back fifteen to twenty.

KEXP has run into the same problem many other stations have-all the songs seem to run together after awhile. This is not true of the morning show, the specialty programs or for some of the late night DJ's but the afternoon and late morning shows have this problem in spades. Otherwise KEXP's website and programming make it the best radio station that exists anywhere in this country.

They stock a wide range of vitamins and minerals, protein drinks and bars, as well as a large selection of acidophilus products.

The crowds keep on showing up because of the great deals and fantastic customer service. You can show up with a pair of worn shoes that don't fit you and Nordstom will fix them or exchange them for free. Prices can be reasonable, especially during the sales.

Cupcake Royale, with locations in Ballard and Madrona is a great place to pick up a treat for friends or colleagues. The cupcakes are tasty with just the right amount of frosty to cake ratio. While some cupcakes are always available, there are seasonal cupcakes that rotate on and off the menu year round. Extra small cupcakes are also available and decent coffee is served on the premises. Prices are a little high in my opinion but better than the two fifty you would pay for the stale pastry at the Starbucks down the street.
