Chinese Menu is Fiine; Japanese Menu Not So Hot

Monday, August 15, 2005
The West Village isn't a likely place for good Chinese food, and Hunan Pan is about the best I've found. The fried shrimp and fried squid are great. They know how to cook vegetables well, and the 7 day a week lunch special can't be beat. The do a nice job with pork and lamb, too. Basil fish is a special dish. The Japanese side of the menu is not much better than supermarket quality: only get it if you are desperate. And there are times when delivery in 10 minutes and reasonable prices make you desperate....
