Chelsea Market is one of my very favorite places to go in New York City. It is this wonderful old brick building with quite a few shops inside. The architecture itself is worth the visit. There is a bakery, a butcher a dairy store, a fruit and veggie place, a newstand, a florist and some other odds and ends. There are a few restaurants in there as well. It is especially nice at Christmas when it is all decorated and lit up.

Everyone I know in New York City loves this place. I've always found it to be crowded and overly priced. The food I've had from there has always been consistantly good and they do have a nice selection . . . but I'm not sure it's worth it. Especially on the weekends -- that place is packed!! But the locals swear by it and it's definately one of those "New York City" spots that everyone should visit at least once.

Fairway is by far the best market/grocery store in New York City. The selection is huge, the parking easy, the food fresh and the service good. The prices are extremely reasonable as well. Typical staples (canned food, paper products) can often be found cheaper elsewhere -- but the fresh fruits and veggies can't be beat in either their quality or price. Definately worth the trip!!

Canal Jean Company certainly has jeans -- but has lots of other funky clothes as well. The style is primarily vintage -- sort of an "East Village" look and feel. The prices are generally reasonable. The dressing rooms are small and there are not enough of them. The staff is hit or miss -- sometimes helpful, sometimes not.

If you love cheese, then Murray's Cheese Shop is definately worth the trip. They are the cheese experts -- with a huge selection of pretty much anything you can imagine. A long time staple in the West Village of New York City -- this store is frequented mostly by locals but is worth a stop as a tourist as well. They do give samples on request.

Beads World is the place to go if you like to make jewelry. They have a HUGE selection of beads (glass, plastic -- colored, clear -- lots of sizes and shapes.) They beads range from dirt cheap to fairly expensive. They also have a few other supplies that you would need if you were making jewelry. You'll find lots of expert jewelry makers there -- but some first timers as well. The staff is helpful.

The very best things about J&R Music and Computer world is the huge selection and the reasonable prices. You can find just about anything you need in terms of music and computers. The staff is for the most part knowlegable and helpful -- sometimes they are a little busy or difficult to find. But you really can't beat the prices or the selection -- definately comparable to the "chain" industry stores.

Metalliferous is one of my husband's favorite stores in New York City. They have everything metal you can imagine -- sheets cut in specific shapes, beads, trinkets, etc. Lots of artists and crafters frequent this store. The staff is extremely helpful and knowledgable and nice. It's a little difficult to find -- as it's up on the 2nd floor. They also ship, if you are from out of town. Need metal? This is the place for you!!

Located in Canal Street, this is one of my husband's all time favorite stores!! They sell everything from tools to misc. hardware to metal. It's a mom and pop hardware shop. They are fairly helpful in terms of customer service -- but it's best if you go in knowing what you want. It's usually crowded and busy with lots of people looking for specific items.

If you need a new camera or camera essories or film -- B&H is the place to go. This is a HUGE store by New York City standards and they have absolutely everything you could ever need in the photo, video or audio department. They also do a really nice job with developing. The prices are extremely reasonable and the customer service is hard to beat. Those guys know their stuff -- they are very helpful and the wait is usually minimal. I highly recommend this store.
