Afton Alps Ski Area is a really great place to go in the winter. The slopes are well-kept, and are of a wide range of difficulty, so this ski area will appeal to everyone from seasoned individuals to beginners and families.
If you're not too ski- or snowboard-savvy, Afton Alps has an amazing ski school that has been called the best in the Midwest. I know from personal experience that the instructors are awesome -- my boyfriend & his family work there! -- and the prices aren't too bad either.

The White Wolf has a wide selection of both skis and snowboards, ranging from top of the line (slightly expensive) to basic, beginner equipment. The staff is friendly and helpful, willing to take the time out to assist customers & answer any questions. When sales come along, they are amazing (boards for $150, for example). There is, however, a somewhat limited selection of skis.

If your children love to read or be read to, or if you'd like to encourage them to read, the Red Balloon Bookshop is a great place to visit. Specializing in children's books, this large, attractive store has literature in every genre you could think of, from adoption to sports to general fiction. And since the entire store is geared toward children, your kids will love to visit. The Red Balloon also hosts a number of events, from workshops to story hour, so it's a neat place to meet and socialize with other children and parents.

Express Bike Shop on Snelling Avenue in St. Paul is an amazing business. Not only can a college student or other lower-income person pick up a refurb bike for very little money, they can do so with the knowledge that their business is helping at-risk youth in the area. Express Bike Shop collects dontated bikes (so donate yours!) and employs teens from the area, teaching them how to repair the bikes before reselling them. This is a great business, and I'd recommend visiting, buying, or donating.

The Grand Performance bike shop on Grand Avenue in St. Paul is a fabulous place to look for biking equipment or to get advice about the sport. This shop, which is small, but boasts excellent goods and expert staff, is a must for biking buffs in the area. The prices are a little high, but you'll get great advice and won't be unhappy with what you get. This business is also a sponser of the St. Paul Bicycle Racing Club, which is pretty cool and shows how much the company cares about the sport.

St. Paul Corner drug has held on to its classic appeal. Opened in the 1920s, the building and the business both retain their old-fashioned atmosphere. St. Paul Corner Drug is not only a modern pharmacy; it is also a gift shop. Even better, it boasts and old-fashioned soda fountain! This drugstore is a great locally-owned place to get your prescriptions filled. It's also a nice place to visit.

Mississippi Market is a favorite of St. Paul residents who are into natrual foods. As a co-op, the prices there are pretty low, and they offer many items that a normal grocery store doesn't carry. Fresh produce and other items like fill-your-own-bottle honey are huge draws to this establishment; I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a visit to anyone interested in natural foods, or to anyone who is just looking for a different shopping experience.

The Quest club is a pretty decent music venue in Minneapolis. While they are able to draw some big names, my impression is that their lineup is generally small-name bands. They also deal exclusively with Ticketmaster, which means that your concert ticket will cost twice as much as it should. If a band you like is playing, go ahead and visit the Quest, but I wouldn't make any special effort.

With a long an colorful history behind it, First Avenue is one of the premier live music venues in the Twin Cities. Housed in a building that was once a Greyhound station, and with a long list of changed hands and even a bankruptcy closure, First Ave. has a lot of history behind it. Refusing to sell out to Big Media, this club has used its amazing lineup (Dillinger Four played their first headlining show there!) and loyal fanbase to keep its head above water. And since they still sell tickets instead of letting Ticketmaster handle it all, prices are lower than other clubs like the Quest.
