Hobbies Unlimited has been around for decades. They sell small kits to build miniature kits, for things like cars, planes and boats. There is also an extensive collection of products (paints, small parts) to maintain (and sometimes even upgrade) these models. There is also kits to build miniature rockets, which I have always wanted to buy but they are a little pricey and require a big big back yard.

This gym is housed in the former Real World house. It is basically four floors: the basement is where the massages takes place and also where the lockers and showers are. The first floor holds a juice bar and a classroom. The second floor and third floor house a lot of treadmills, ellipticals, free weights and machines. The gym is pretty quiet during the afternoons (when I went) and people kept to themselves. The staff is friendly, just slightly less pretentious than most gym staffs. A nice feature is that every treadmill and elliptical has its own flat screen TV with Satellite cable. The machines on the 2nd and 3rd floor are a little crowded.

Sams is the best place to shop for wine and spirits. They have an extensive collection of liquor from around the world. Not sure what to get? Ask one of the many helpful staff members. They are all very knowledgeable about which type of drink goes with which type of food. They also sell cheeses and exotic snacks.

This hold-in-the-wall Indian restaurant has a great buffet. In fact, it is probably the only thing it has going for it. The food is tasty, appropriately spicy, though a little greasy. The samosas are very good. The service is friendly but spotty (the manager/waiter looks bored most of the time). The interiors are pretty bare and the inside is not lit well. It’s BYOB, which is great. The bathroom is a little scary.

This is the place for Bubble Tea in Chinatown. Though there is a special counter just for ordering Bubble Tea, there is usually a line stretching outside. The ingredients are fresh and they prepare the drink right in front of you. The restaurant is a crowded and the food is definitely overshadowed by the drinks. There’s not much on the menu for vegetarians, but that is a problem at most restaurants in China-town. Skip the other shops selling bubble tea, and wait for Joy Yee – definitely worth it.

Once of the better Thai restaurants on “Thai Row” in Hyde Park (there are about 4-5 Thai restaurants in a two block span). The food here is full of flavor. The curries are spicy and the Pad Thai is solid. It is a little on the greasy side. I highly recommend the “Original Hot Number 1”. Though it has a stupid name, it is very spicy and full of flavor. The interior is pretty bare and small. The staff is friendly. In fact, during one brutally cold Chicago winter day, the manager took my order for carry out and insisted I have some hot tea before I left. It was so thoughtful and kind, and probably the reason I come here over and over again.

The menu here is a mix of southern/Cajun style food. Lots of great side dishes – in fact I recommend stringing a few of them together to make a meal. Their brunch is definitely the highlight, though the crowd during the weekend can put one off. There’s not much of a wait, but the staff is a little strained and it can get pretty loud. I recommend the Corn Cakes for brunch, a spicy corn bread pancake. The artwork on the walls is hilarious.

This is a small take out place that’s great for eating after a late-late night. There is no seating outside, but they do have seating outdoors during the summer. The food is basic Mexican fare. The super-nachos are great, especially for a group of friends looking to snack after a night of drinking.

I know a lot of restaurants try to claim this title, but this is the best. The burrito is about 8-9 inches long and THICK. It has the perfect balance of beans, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, rice, avocado and cheese. It is a meal onto itself. Though pricey (around $6-7), it is a meal onto itself. I’m ambivalent about the rest of the menu, the enchiladas aren’t that flavorful, and my friends who eat meat say the steak burritos and other menu items are just OKAY. The margaritas are pretty standard. The interior is very nice. There are two seating areas. The area in front has a large mural of the sky on the ceiling, which is pretty impressive. The staff is friendly and attentive.
