This new grocery store nestled in the middle of the Lower East Side, but a little beyond the trendy area of Clinton St., has some gourmet and organic foods you would otherwise have to travel to the East Village to find, but there selection is not huge and the staff is a little oblivious to what most of the stuff they carry actually is.

This is a great place for super-cheap organic food, especially if you join as a working or non-working member and get 25% or 10% off, respectively. It's tiny, doesn't have a vast stock, it's often the cashier's first day, and can be quite slow, but you can't beat the price anywhere for local produce and bulk organic goods.

Commodities has more items in stock than almost any other health food store around, perhaps besides Whole Foods, but the aisles are very cramped and the prices are not cheap! This is one of the few places you can get a large selection of organic bulk dry goods and spices. The beauty and herb section is pretty extensive too.

Although this isn't the greatest health food store around, it seems to be doing pretty well since there's not much like it nearby. They have a moderate selection for their small space, but the staff isn't always so knowledgeable and they often seem to be pushing plastic bags on you (leading me to call it "Earth Doesn't Matter"). They may be in trouble when Whole Foods opens 3 blocks away in the near future.

Angelica's has more herbs in stock than any other place around, but the service can be quite strange and gruff. You're not allowed to take any notes, photos, or audio recordings in the store (guess they're worried someone will steal their "proprietary" herb knowledge), and once you get a prescription from the proprietress, you better damn well follow it! Pricey too.

A dank downstairs setting for this herb store lends a strange mysterious quality to it, but they have tons of nice dried herbs hanging from the ceiling and the owner is always up for a conversation on any topic from herbs to politics. You just have to make an appointment ahead of time (same day) to go in, which is probably good since it is a bit hard to find.

With great rows of herbs in mason jars on the shelves, friendly staff, sage advice, and the sweet aroma of dried plants, this is an oasis in the middle of the busy city to visit anytime you need something as simple as wild harvested echinacea to the more esoteric requests of toothache plant and yohimbe tincture. There are tons of great books to look at and the staff will always give you excellent recommendations for whatever ails you.

Dr. Nash, unlike many doctors today, takes the time to spend longer than the insurance-mandated 7 minutes per patient with you. He spent 25+ minutes asking me all kinds of questions about my medical and family history to get down to the bottom of the problem and offer a solution that didn't not depend on drastic drugs that would have excessive side effects.

I felt that Franklin Dental urged over $1000 of not completely necessary root canal and crown services on me when I am a student with no income and couldn't really afford this procedures. My succesive dentists have said that these procedures most likely weren't necessary. Not to mention that they overcharged me several times for procedures according to my insurance plan.

You can't beat RYAN/NENA's sliding scale prices (from $29 for students/no income) for primary care, dentistry, optometrists, and other basic medical services. The waits can be quite excrutiating, however, and the bureaucracy a little hard to navigate, but it is often worth it if you have no alternative. Christine Langdon makes a great primary physician.
