Stephen Kolnik has been my main eye care man for several years. He is not only polite and professional but communicates very well so you, as patient, know what he means and what is happening. That cannot be underrated.
Stephen helped me make decisions regarding laser surgery. He pointed me in the direction of a clinic in Montreal called Laservue for three important reasons: 1. because the results he saw from them were excellent; 2. because at that time the advanced form of laser surgery - custom cornea, zyoptix, etc. - was not yet available in the US while these doctors had already performed thousands of these procedures; and 3. the cost was less than half.
Seeing Stephen has been one of the better professional service relationships I've had.

Hondar House is an independent garage that only services Hondas and Acuras. They are smart and charge less than the dealers because the dealers charge everything according to a flat hourly rate - meaning that a job is scheduled for an amount of time and that is the minimum billed. You deal with an owner, a guy who loves cars and knows how to fix them.
I've always had Hondas or Acuras. Here's a short story: one of my Hondas developed a problem with stalling. I first took it to a local garage and they wanted to put in a new carburetor. I took it to a dealer and they said the same thing. Hondar House realized the problem was a leak in the filler hose and fixed it.

This is Salvadoran food, not Mexican. It's spiced differently and has a different texture. And it is freaking excellent.
Along with the usual choices, they offer tongue (lengua) and, depending on the day of the week, a delicious soup. The chicken soup is great - fragant and savory.
The menu is hard to follow and varies a little depending on which board you look at and the language you read. I recommend the pupusas, which are corn tortilla, pork and cheese, with pickled cabbage and sauce. Yum.
Tacos Lupita is on the main drag coming out of Porter Square on the Somerville side, close to the crossover to Beacon Street in Cambridge.

Interior Review offers a unique service - they scan the interior of your house or apartment into a computer and generate a computer drawing of your floorplan. This may sound silly but when you do home renovations, you need an "as-built" plan. You typically pay your architect to come out and measure and draw. That's expensive. This is cheaper and more accurate by far.
The process is simple. A guy walks around your house with a laptop computer and a laser measuring device that is connected to software on the laptop. Each wall, corner, height, etc. is measured - the tolerances can be exact - and then a complete plan can be computer generated or transferred directly into your architect's computer.

The Coolidge is unique. It truly is a community movie theater; it's programming ranges from films for parents with tiny children (noise permitted) to special member events like a Jaws Labor Day cookout and speech by a shark expert.
The Coolidge is also a city and regional treasure and force. The Coolidge Award is now two years old and has been bestowed on two important film makers - Chinese director Yang Zhimou and the great Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storari. The events surrounding the Award included panels and special screenings.
The Coolidge shows a mix of indie and foreign films with the odd mainstream movie thrown in. They have three theatres. The main one is huge. The old balcony has been converted into a decent sized second theatre. The third is called the Screening Room and shows video and other specialized programs.
It's impossible to describe the variety of the Coolidge's movie program. For example, this summer they had a 3D film festival. Before showing Dial M for Murder, Stephen Pinker gave a talk about how 3D works and how the mind perceives it. Now they are beginning a series of movies and science, with each film being introduced by a scientist.
Join the Coolidge and you'll get free tickets to special events, like Jaws and a hilarious Big Lebowski screening that included games and contests. You'll also get discounts at many stores, including Brookline Booksmith.

OK, so you want pizza. You have maybe a dollar or two. We can argue all day about who makes the best pizza, whether it should have goat cheese or just mozzarella, but you should just head to Haymarket and get a slice or two. You can feed yourself for your couple of dollars and you'll love it.
The pizza is cheap and has a terrific crust. As you add toppings, the price per slice goes up - still under $2 for a huge piece. A whole cheese pizza is still about $5.
But the thing about Haymarket Pizza is the atmosphere. It is in Haymarket. You step up to the counter, which is often jammed, and get your food. You then find a ratty old stool to sit on - or, if the weather is decent and the Haymarket produce market isn't open (Friday and Saturday), you stand outside at some old counters supported by saw horses. There you share your meal with attorneys in fancy suits and construction workers in overalls. You drop some crumbs to the pigeons. You watch the halal meat market get a delivery of goats - I'm not kidding. During Haymarket days, you can fight through the crowds and step into the suddenly calm oasis and enjoy a slice while watching the throngs push past. It's a real scene.

It may seem odd to review a computer store, but Micro Center is not that well known. They are a chain with 20 locations across the country and the Cambridge store is the only one in New England.
Micro Center carries everything you need to build a PC, every cable you might ever want, every switch, every form of media and case, etc.
They have a large central shopping area filled with parts, add-ons and software. On the side are rooms for selling Macs, PC's, monitors, cameras, pda's, printers, scanners, etc. They also have one of the largest, if not the largest selection of computing books and magazines.
I always check Micro Center when I need or want something. Odds are they have it or something similar. I may decide to buy online or from another store but Micro Center is at the very least a huge resource for investigating. I've also spent way too much money there over the years.
Located near the BU bridge. Shares a lot with Trader Joe's.

Russo's is by far the best fruit and vegetable market in the Boston area. They carry a wider variety and generally have lower prices than the supermarkets. As for variety, in summer, they usually carry several varieties of melon, like Crenshaw and Sharlynn, along with the standard cantaloupe and honeydew. The prices for these specialty melons are much lower than at a market, if they even have the item.
Russo today had Romaine, green leaf, red leaf and Boston letture for 98 cents a head. The markets are all higher. They had fresh picked that day corn - deliciously sweet. They carry oyster mushrooms and chanterelles. They have a wide selection of Asian vegetables - many kinds of choy - and Asian and Latin fruits.
Russo's also has one of the better cheese shops in the area. It is not as cheaply priced.
They also have prepared foods, but the real gem beyond the produce is the bakery. Their breads are fantastic with thick, chewy crusts and cost a fraction of bread elsewhere. I bought a rustic loaf for $2 and their Vienna Bread only recently went up to $1.49 from 99 cents for a large loaf. They also carry a number of breads from Montreal bakeries. And to top it off, they make excellent pastries and cookies. Their macaroons are fabulous.

Matt Murphy's is simply a great pub and a great place to eat lunch or dinner. The differences are that Matt Murphy's was begun by a restauranteur, not a bartender, and it has always maintained a casual, almost country flavor which is friendly and authentic.
Unlike most Irish bars around Boston, Matt Murphy's has real pub food, not the hamburgers or upscaled sandwiches you now find. The bread is thick cut. The food is rustic and unpretentious. And yes, they take the full time to pour a true stout, letting it settle rather than rush it.
It seems like an easy recipe, making an Irish bar that feels real. But only a few get it right and Matt Murphy's is one. You never feel processed here.
BTW, the place is small. It is in a small restaurant row in Brookline Village.

Boston is not a great deli town. It is, in fact, a rather lousy deli town, especially if you're used to great deli food like they have in New York (or Detroit or LA or even Chicago).
Michael's Deli is located at Harvard and Beacon. They import the corned beef from NYC. It tastes like real corned beef, with the proper mouth feel that is slightly salty, slightly fat and creamy. They make their own turkey, which is excellent.
Sandwiches are 8 to 9 ounces of meat. They use good breads - especially when compared to the low grade breads used in many Boston deli's.
The pickles are excellent. The knishes, which are huge, cost only $2.25 and make a meal. I prefer the potato knishes, which are rich but not leaden.
We have bought food in bulk for parties. All I can say is buy more corned beef because people go nuts for it. If you need a real deli fix, Michael's is the place.
