this is the best fitness club i've ever joined. they really have everything you could need, and lots of nice touches like lotion, q-tips and even mouthwash in the women's locker room. the locker rooms themselves are awesome, and have hot tubs, steam room and sauna. the club has tons of great classes - spinning, salsa dance, pilates, hip hop, and tons more. the instructors are very welcoming. another very nice feature is individual televisions at treadmills and elliptical machines - makes your work out go much faster, all you have to do is bring your own headphones and you can watch any of 80 channels.

this bed and breakfast is an absolutely perfect place to stay. the grounds, although very small, are carefully groomed and just gorgeous. even though it is on a somewhat busy road, you feel as if you are at a country cottage. the main room is incredibly open and airy, with high vaulted ceilings, and a large sitting area. the hosts are kind and welcoming and the food is good. they obviously take their goal of being environmentally friendly very seriously. this is a very peaceful place to stay, and is less than 10 minutes from downtown madison, either by car or by bus.

they have a huge range of sports products, from swimming to fishing to skiing. they carry patagonia items, which are expensive, but worth it. they have frequent sales which can make their clothing more affordable. during the winter they have everything you could possibly need for all winter sports, and they do have a range of brands, some more affordable than others. the staff is very helpful, and this feels like an old local business that really cares about the community where it operates. it's a pretty large store given it's downtown location, and much more convenient than driving out to one of the malls.

this bookstore has a very broad selection of progressive books, magazines, and other publications. it's just off state street on west johnson, and it's set up to be very cozy and welcoming. generally, the staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. it's certainly not a place for bill o'reilly fans, but it does have a wide range of books as well as great cards and calendars. they also carry some other little gifts. it's not as comprehensive as say the university bookstore, but it's a great place to go and it's nice to support a local business.

although the place is always overrun by tourists, it's always fun to go to the boardwalk. the best time to go is on 60 cent nights (monday and/or tuesdays during the summer) when you really can ride every ride - including the giant dipper - for only 60 cents. my favorites at the boardwalk are the same they have been for years - the giant dipper (favorite ride), skeeball (favorite game) and chocolate dipped ice cream cones (favorite food). they also have funnel cake, which is hard to resist.

everyone says this is the best bakery in the city, and it is. it is no accident that they have been voted best of san francisco by the weekly multiple times. located at 18th and guerrero, they are so good they don't even need a sign. their pasteries really are unbelievable, and i would even go so far as to say that they are worth the price. and they also have amazing lunches. the tables are always crowded, so be ready to sit outside or go for a walk if you want to wait for one to clear up.

i'm not exactly sure why so many people consider this to be the best sushi in the city. i know i've had better sushi in palo alto, for example, and i'm guessing the city should be able to out-do palo alto in pretty much every area. their fish is good and they have some unique and very good rolls, but i just don't think it's the best. it's a pretty small place, and if you make reservations you can get a table for your group where you all sit on the floor. it's definitely a fun place to go and the sushi is quite good. there are coupons on the web for 10% off that you can print and bring in (but they make you hand them in, so don't forget!)

dancing, great djs almost every night, shuffleboard (and one that is actually kept pretty nice), and a huge outside patio area surrounded by lush jungle-like plants. when you are out there, you don't feel like you're in the mission. they also have oysters for happy hour every friday. their drink prices are very very reasonable, and the bar tenders are friendly. they start carding at the door later in the evening each night. this is a great place to do with a big group, or just with a couple friends.

this is a great cafe for reading, writing, or talking. the ceilings are high, there are lots of plants, and there is always great artwork up. it has a very nice, open, airy feeling that you don't always get from cafes in the city. their drinks are very good, as are their pasteries. it's also nice to be somewhat off the beaten track on guerrero, and this place isn't usually too busy. it's a lot quieter than other local places.

i think this bar is heavily underrated. there are obviously plenty of places to eat and drink in the mission, but when i lived nearby, i found myself drawn to the phoenix more often than not. it's an irish pub, and they have some traditional pub fare that is quite good. they also have a very good happy hour with great prices on drinks and appetizers. the fries are excellent, and the chicken wings aren't bad. good selection of beers, and always some soccer playing on the tv.
