To say that a long line is a good baromter of the sucess of a business would be apropos in the case of Nica's deli. You better get to Nica's before noon or you will wait in line. In less than a year of its existence - Nica's has clearly supplanted Romeo and Joe's as the best deli in town (though both are comparable).
Both fully served meals, deli sandwiches assorted baked goods, produce and fruits shipped in from New York city daily are a few of the reasons this place is always packed.
I'd say it's on par with what you would expect to find in a top New York city deli.

I wouldn't say Willoughby's is the best coffee shop but it's probably the best here in New Haven. I order my coffee mostly mail order from the west coast (Seattle etc.). Personally, I like the smaller chains personally more than the behemoth national chains (e.g. Starbucks) which to me tastes burned and pretty much indistinguishable from one cup to the next.
I order both whole beans and single cups from Willoughby's - though mostly the former. They have a huge selection of French roasts and beans are dated to ensure freshness. I think the House Blend and the Downtown Blend are the best. I also like the French Roast Columbian for the French press.
The sales staff are helpful when buying beans though not as accomodating l when buying coffee supplies. But you could say New Haven isn't a very friendly place in general.

The noodle bowl comes w/ a choice of beef, shrimp or chicken. And either Udon or other noodle choices. It's really a meal in and of itself.
It's also probably the best value on the menu starting around 12 bucks.
Bentara also has a nice bar in front and back if you just want cocktails. It's a very nice atmosphere and great for small and large parties.
It's also something different in a town with no shortage of Italian restaurants.
