New Bell is a decent local car service for the Clinton Hill area. They usually come pretty quickly after you call. The cars are usually pretty junky looking, but they always get you where you are going without incident. I used to rely heavily on Myrtle Car Service, but I find that New Bell is faster and more reliable, to the city, airports or wherever you need to go.

J & R occupies a whole series of buildings on Park Row across from City Hall. They have everything electronic: Computers, stereos, TVs, videos, cds, cameras, etc. Annoyingly, everything is in a different storefront with a different entrance and most are not connected inside. However, after a couple of visits, you will get the hang of it. And its worth it because they have absolutely everything you will ever need and good prices on top of it.

Tri-State is the least expensive car insurance I could find. It is much cheaper than geico for the same coverage on the same car. There are some catches, you have to have a clean driving record and you have to have already been insured in New York for at least 18 months before they will cover you. As far as I can tell, this is the cheapest way to insure your car in NYC.

This is the first specialty wine shop in Clinton Hill. Good selection of wines (not all expensive either) and helpful, knowledgeable, friendly owner. They also have really convenient hours, open pretty late every night, even sundays. The owner also has an awesome little pug that is very friendly. I usually just play with the dog while I let my girlfriend pick out the wine.

James Deutsch is a great, but very busy eye doctor. I originally started going to him because someone at my work lived in the building above his office and he took my insurance. It turns out that he's a great doctor. very professional, and friendly. He gets very busy, though, so you have to book way in advance (sometimes like 3 or 4 months). He doesn't sell glasses, he'll do you eye exam, and write you a prescription. You can order contacts directly through him.

Great prescription service: they are quick in filling any prescription and they will deliver them. For some reason, Irmat seems to have a problem with the concept of prescription refills, so you have to watch out for that. Good selection of snacks. Decent greeting card selection. They have all the other pharmacy-type necessities like toothpaste, soap, deodorant, etc.

The knitting factory has had lots of good shows (not only rock, but other stuff, too) for many years. There are often multiple shows on multiple floors on any given night. It's really pretty small inside, so you will get to see the bands up pretty close. There are conveniently located bars, so you never have to get too far away from the action for a refill.

Beads World is not the best bead store. It has a decent selection of beads and findings, but the prices are a bit high and the quality is only so-so. In fact, I wouldn't recommend buying any findings here at all. It does have a convenient location & good hours (i.e. open on the weekends). If you want better beads, you should try Phoenix instead.

Pearl River mart has lots of Chinese products, including food, teas, dishes, clothes, kitchen supplies, etc. It used to be a real Chinese department store and it was really fun to go up its crowded floors at canal and broadway. Now they have a huge spacious store and some of the same products, but none of the charm and none of the Chinese customers. Its still inexpensive and still has some good stuff.

Toback's is a professional jewelry supply store with just about everything you could ever need to make jewelry. they will even melt down your scrap metal. rookies shouldn't be intimidated though, because they are super nice and will explain anything to you. Supposedly this place started out as one stand and now they own the whole building, so they must be good.
